- First permanent Spanish settlement is established at St. Augustine.
The city was to play a crucial role for the Spanish Empire, safeguarding the key commerce route to Europe through the Gulf Stream, the Atlantic Ocean's main west-to-east current. St. Augustine, as the territorial capital, would also defend the Spanish-claimed region from attack. -
Roanoke Colony disappears and is called the Lost Colony.
There are a lot of hypotheses about what happened to Roanoke, none of them are very nice. Historians have speculated that the colonists were slaughtered by hostile Native Americans or Spaniards, or that they died of disease or malnutrition, or that they were murdered by a devastating storm. -
Jamestown settlement
In 1606 a group of affluent men founded the settlement of Jamestown in Virginia. However, the colony failed in 1609-1610, with almost 400 people dying. The Jamestown colony fell due to sickness and starvation. -
Pocahontas and John Rolfe marry.
Pocahontas and John Rolfe married in Jamestown in April 1614. Her father agreed to the marriage only because she was being held captive and he was afraid of the consequences if he refused. -
House of Burgesses formed.
The House of Burgesses was the first democratically elected legislative body in the British American colonies, with its origins in the inaugural meeting of the Virginia General Assembly at Jamestown in July 1619. -
Plymouth Colony
