  • Roanoke

    Roanoke
    Roanoke island was settled on by 100 men, women, and children. John White was the leader. The area will become apart of North Carolina. John White went back to England after they settled in Roanoke. It took White 3 years to return back to Roanoke and everyone was gone when he arrived. White could never get enough money to go to America and return to his family and other settlers.
  • Jamestown

    Jamestown
    This colony was private and financed and organized by the Virginia company of London. Famine, disease and conflict brought Jamestown to failure. Tobacco became Virginias first profitable export. In the 1620s Jamestown expanded into a new town built to the east from the original James Fort. Jamestown was the capital of Virginia colony until 1699. Only 38 of the 150 settlers survived the first winter. Winter was very bad and men refused to work
  • Salutary Neglect

    Salutary Neglect
    The Salutary Neglect was a fight on which trading routes the North American colonists should be talking. The Neglect had increasing legislative institutions which led to American independence. When they had a good balance of trade it allowed the english to manufacture goods. The neglect was a unofficial policy created by Robert Walpole. By using this policy it didn’t allow American colonies to trade with the non-British.
  • House of Burgesses

    House of Burgesses
    Sir William Berkeley split the house off as a separate chamber. The House of Burgesses created laws and got supplies. It was created by government George Yeardley in Jamestown. The council and governor liked the right of revision.
  • Great Migration

    Great Migration
    Religion and economic reasons played a big part in why the puritans left England. The non-separatists wanted to reform the church within but the separatists wanted to separate from the church. The separatists left and went to the new world.
  • Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
    The Mayflower compact was the first governing document of the plymouth colony. It was written by separatists puritans, adventures and tradesmen that were on the Mayflower. The colonists agreed to follow the Mayflower compact and choose their leaders and make their own laws. The compact was very important because it was the first document to establish self-government in the new world. It’s purpose was to create equal laws for everyone.
  • New York

    New York
    The New York colony was founded by the duke of York and other colonists on Manhattan Island in 1626. The colony joined 12 of the 13 colonies and rebelled against Great Britain and became a U.S state of New York. Before is was claimed as a colony it was taken by the Dutch.
  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    Massachusetts Bay Colony
    Massachusetts was settled by pilgrims and puritans trying to fine religious freedom. in New England. Pilgrims had another name and they were called separatists. Puritans wanted to purify the church of England. Massachusetts wanted to go to Virginia to create a church free of royal control.
  • Maryland

    Maryland
    Maryland was settled by Lord Baltimore in 1632 in the southern colony. He was a catholic and convinced King Charles I to give him 100 million acres for Catholics to settle. Maryland was settled as a proprietary colony. Before Baltimore was able to do anything with all of the land he died.
  • Rhode Island

    Rhode Island
    Rhode Island was settled by Roger Williams and his supporters in 1635 and it is apart of the New England colonies. Roger Williams left the Massachusetts Bay Colony for saying something against the government because of religious dissention. Roger William founded Rhode Island and there were no religious persecution of Christians. When the colony was first founded it was originally named Roodt Eylandt by the Dutch.
  • Connecticut

    Connecticut
    It was created for a settlement for puritan congregation. Thomas Hooker was the founder of Connecticut in 1936. It was the first written constitution in North America. Citizenship was based on land ownership.
  • Maryland Toleration Act

    Maryland Toleration Act
    The Maryland Toleration Act didn't bring complete religion freedom. The Maryland Toleration Act was also called the Act concerning religion and it was a law mandating religious tolerance. It was the second law created that had to do with religion. The act allowed freedom of worship for all Christians in Maryland but anyone who denied the divinity of Jesus was sentenced to death. This rule was created by William Claiborne in 1654.
  • Carolina

    Carolina
    Carolina was settled by King Charles II in 1663 and it is apart of the southern colony. Cash crops were grown for selling and getting money rather than just for the farmers. In 1720 the Carolinas got outnumbered by African slaves. Carolina became a royal and split into north and south Carolina. People grew rice, indigo, and tabacco for cash crops
  • Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania
    The Pennsylvania Colony was founded in 1682 by William Penn and other colonists. The Pennsylvania colony was one of original colonies of the thirteen colonies. The Pennsylvania colony was classified as a middle colony. King Charles II of England said in the charter given to William Penn that the name should be Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania offered religious freedom but it was not the first colony to offer it Rhode Island.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    Salem Witch Trials
    The Salem Witch Trials occurred when more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft and 20 people were executed. After a little bit in Massachusetts where the Salem Witch Trials were held the colony admitted the trials were a mistake. Also, during this time people thought that the witches could give people the power to hurt others.
  • Great Awakening/Enlightenment

    Great Awakening/Enlightenment
    The great awakening impacted English colonies 1730s until 1741. The result was renewed dedication toward religion. It also had a very big impact on various Christian denominations. Religion became more formal and less personal which led to lower church attendance. Most of the thirteen were religiously divided. Most people consider Jonathan Edwards as one of the chief founders of the great awakening. In 1741 Jonathan Edwards gave a sermon called "Sinners in the hands of angry Gods."
  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan
    Representatives from seven of the British North American colonies adopted the plan. This was the first important plan to conceive the colonists. The Albany plan was created in a big meeting called the Albany congress. The plan was used to create a unified government of the thirteen colonies this was suggested by Benjamin Franklin.
  • French-Indian War

    French-Indian War
    The French Indian war was the British American against the French. The British American had 2 million colonists compared to the French who had 60,000 colonists. The French Indian war lasted a long nine years 1754-63. The reason the French-Indian war started was because they were fighting over if the upper Ohio River valley was part of the British empire or if it was part of the French empire.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The proclamation of 1763 was created by king George III. The proclamation had to do with all the land given by the the British government. This proclamation created a boundary line separating the British colonies from the American indian lands. After the French and Indian war the British empire began to tighten its control over its colonies. The proclamation made many of the colonists want to refuse to obey it. Lots of colonists did not like the restrictions on trade and migration.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    The rebellion was in Virginia led by Bacon against William Berkeley in 1976. The rebellion caused many economic problems like declining tobacco prices, restricted English market, and rising prices of manufactured goods. The Bacon rebellion was led by two stubborn and selfish leaders instead of glorious fight against tyranny.
