Columbus Reaches the New World
Christopher Columbus persuaded the Spanish monarchs to outfit him with three ships to sail westward. After six weeks at sea, he reached the new world and lands on the small island of Hispaniola in the Bahamas. -

Treaty of Tordesillas
Spain secured its claim to Columbus's discovery but had to divide the "heathen lands" of the New World with Portugal. This division was part of the Treaty of Tordesillas where the lion's share went to Spain and Portugal received territory in Africa and Asia. -

Balboa Claims Land
Vasco Nunez Balboa sailed for Spain and became the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean. He then landed in the waters of Panama, claiming it and the surrounding lands washed by the Pacific Ocean for the King of Spain. -

Cortes conquers Mexico
Hernan Cortes landed in present-day Vera Cruz and explored Mexico until he came across the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. He entered the city being believed to be a god to the people. After exhausting their welcome, the Aztec attack to drive them out which was successful at first until Cortes attacked back and defeated the Aztec. He claimed the Aztec capital and Mexico for Spain. -

Juan Ponce de Leon explores Florida
Juan Ponce de Leon ventured north from the recently claimed Panama and landed in present day Florida. Looking for gold, Juan explored Florida and claimed it for Spain. -

De Soto Explores Mississippi
Undertaking a gold seeking expedition, Hernando de Soto and his six hundred men headed west from Florida to explore the Southeast. He crossed the Mississippi river and laid Spain's claims to it before dying soon after. -

In order to secure the northern periphery of their new world and convert more Indians to Christianity, Spain began to fortify and settle their North American borderlands. To block the French and to protect the sea-lands of the Caribbean, the Spanish erected a fortress at St. Augustine, FL. -

Francis Drake, a British captain, became the first to travel around the globe, returning with many netted profits to his financial backers. -
Raleigh founds Roanoke
After filling in for his recently deceased half brother, Sir Walter Raleigh organized an expedition for colonization in the New World. The expedition first landed on North Carolina's Roanoke Island where the Roanoke colony was established. The colony mysteriously vanished a short time later. -
Onate Conquers Pueblo Peoples
Don Juan de Onate led an expedition from Mexico into the Rio Grande. He and his Spaniards cruelly abused the Pueblos peoples they encountered. In the Battle of Acoma, they severed one foot of each Pueblo person who survived. Once they conqured the Pueblo, Onate claimed the area to be the province of New Mexico. -
Jamestown Colony Founded
The Virginia Company of London received a charter from King James I for a settlement in the New World. With destiny beckoned for Virginia and a desire for gold and to find a passage through America to the Indies, the Virginia Company of Londen set sailed three ships which landed on the banks of the James River. Here, the Jamestown colony was established. -
Rolfe Perfects Tobacco
John Rolfe became the father of the tobacco industry as he perfected the methods of raising and curing the pungent weed. This played a major role as it became a major demand and the cash crop of England. -
House of Burgesses Established
The London Company authorized the settlers to summon an assembly which became known as the House of Burgesses. This assembly decided decisions, held discussions, and handled minor issues. -
Maryland's Catholic Haven
With Protestant England persecuting Roman Catholics, Lord Baltimore of an English Catholic family embarked upon a venture to reap financial profits and create refuge for his fellow Catholics. He established the Maryland colony which was a Catholic safe haven where toleration to all Christians was guaranteed. -
Georgia Colony Founded
To protect the Carolinas against the Spaniards in Florida and French from Louisanna, the English crown intended to use Gerogia as a protector. Georgia was established and indeed suffered much buffeting when wars broke out.
