  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Stalin tried to force the western Allies out if Berlin by stealing off all railroads and highways into the western sectors of the city. The former German capital was occupied by all four victorious Allies even though it lay in the Soviet zone.

    It was an effort to force the U.S. to accept Soviet demands concerning the postwar fate of Germany. Because of the Soviet blockade the people of West Berlin were left without food, clothing, or medical supplies.

    President Truman signed an Economic Recovery Act, it became known as the Marshall plan. Which it proposed that the United States provide money to countries to rebuild their economies.

    Chinese civil war introduces communism, led by Mao Zedong. Mao ordered land to be taken from and redistributed amoungst the peasantry. Had strong support of the peasants by promising land redistribution. The five year plan was to increase industry and it was a success. Red guards targeted anyone they felt went against Mao's teachings.

    Korean War began when North Korea supported Soviet Union and China support the invasion of South Korea. Also was supported by the U.S. Leader of the United forces nations, Macarthur drove North Korean back across the divide. The Korean War was important on the Cold War because it showed that the U.S and Soviet Union could fight a limited war in a third country.

    The Vietnam War was a divisive conflict that pitted the communists government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam with its principal ally the U.S. The communist in North Vietnam signed a peace treaty effectively surrendering. Between 200,000 and 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died.

    Khrushchev’s policy of de stalinisation caused problems in Eastern European countries. People hated the censorship and lack of freedom Russia controlled.

    Sputnik is the first artificial earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched in October 4, 1957, orbiting for three days until it’s battery died. Americans acted with dismay that the Soviets have gotten so far ahead of the U.S.

    A push by Mao Zedong to change china into a industrial society. The failure in the Great Leap Forward was the lack of central planning by the Chinese government. Communes falsely reported high production of food to impress Mao, it left them starving.

    Was designed to land humans to the moon and back to earth safely. The Soviet Union achieved an early lead in the space race by launching the first artificial satellite. The U.S led the moon race by landing Neil Armstrong to the moon.

    Mao encouraged Red Guards to purge intellectuals and artists (some were enemies of Mao). Red Guards targeted anyone they felt went against Mao's teachings. Parents, teachers, government officials were not exempt from public humiliation, beatings, torture, and execution.
