The Berlin Airlift was a 327 day operation in which the U.S. and British planes flew food & supplies into W. Berlin after the Soviets blockaded the city in 1948. This was in response to the Soviet Union blockading W. Berlin. The response of the Soviet Union was that they could not shoot down these american air force planes because that would be an act of war, however they eventually with drawled the blockade. This event was big deal because it saved thousands of Germany citizens. -

NATO is an acronym for North Atlantic Treaty Organization and it was a defensive military alliance formed in 1949 by Western European countries, the United Sates and Canada. The Korean war started when the Communist North Korea invaded democratic South Korea, however with the support of the U.S. in South Korea, the two divided nations came to an armistice. -

Harry S. Truman, the president of the U.S. at the time decided to fire the general Douglas MacArthur on April 7, 1951. This was in response of MacArthur stating that he wanted to use nuclear weapons on the Soviet Union. This is a big deal because if the U.S. had went into a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, then it could have ended human civilization. -

In 1953, North and South Korea agree to an Armistice, which it enables the end of the war. This is a response to when communist North Korea invaded democracy South Korea. This is a big deal because it showed that the U.S. were willing to support South Korea to fight against communism and it also contained communism. -

East and West Germany were formed because West Germany was under the power of the United States, United Kingdom, and France; under a democracy. The east side was ruled under the Soviet Union and had a communist government -
Warsaw Pact Formed
The Soviet Union, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Albania, Romania, East Germany, Czechoslovakia all joined a military alliance in 1955. This was in response to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) forming, including the U.S, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. This is big deal because it shows that the world is divided. -
NASA Created
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is an American government agency that deals with the science and technology of airplanes and space and was created in 1958. This was created in response to the creation of NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) in 1915 and is also a result of an arms race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. This is important because this agency improves the science and technology of airplanes and space to be militarily advanced. -
U-2 Incident
The U-2 incident was the downing of an U.S. spy plane and capture of it's pilot by the Soviet Union in 1960. The Soviet Union and the U.S. cone to an agreement prior to this incident that neither of these countries would spy on each other. Therefore the downing of this plane is in response of the spying American airplanes. This is important because this action is a factor in the fact that the Soviet Union does not trust the U.S. and it shows an act of aggression. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a concrete wall separating East Berlin and West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, built by the Communist East German government to prevent its citizens fleeing to the West. This was in response to people leaving East Berlin because West Berlin had their government set up as a democracy. This is a big deal because it is inhibiting people from their freedom. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was the panicking of the U.S. because Cuba obtained missiles from the Soviet Union, putting them on our front "door step". In response to this Kennedy decides to retract the missiles we had pointing at the Soviet union in Turkey. This is a big deal because this is when we realized we were heading for nuclear war with the Soviet Union.
