The Japanese surrendered, which brought the World War 2 to an end. -
Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech
Churchill delivered a speech called "Sinews of Peace" which has his very famous phrase "..an iron curtain has descended on Europe". -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman promised to help any country facing a Communist takeover. -
Marshall Plan
This was a program of economic aid offered by the United States to any European country. The plan was not approved by Stalin and any Eastern country, they considered accepting aid was reprimanded severely. As a result, the aid was only given to Western European Countries. -
Rio Pact
United States meet in 19 Latin American countries and they decide to create a security zone around the hemisphere. -
Berlin Blockade
Russia's response to the merger of France, United States ad the United Kingdom partitions of Berlin was to cut all road and rail links to that area. This basically meant that those people who were living in Western Berlin had no access to food supplies and they faced brutal starvation. Food was brought to Western Berlin citizens by United States and the United Kingdom airplanes, this is known as the Berlin Airlift. -

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formed with member states, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, UK, and US. -

Joseph Stalin died at the age of 74. He was succeeded by Nikita Khrushchev. -

The Warsaw Pact was formed with member States of East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union. -
Geneva Accords (Summer 1955)
This was a set of documents that ended the French War with the Vietminh and it divided Vietnam into North and South states. The communist leader of North Vietnam was Ho Chi Minh, while the United States South was led by Ngo Dinh Diem. -
Hungarian Revolution. Part 1
The Revolution began with Hungarians protesting against Communist rule in Budapest. It gathered really quickly momentum and on the 24th of October Soviet tanks entered Budapest. On 28th of October the tanks withdrew and a new government was formed, which introduced democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. -
Suez Crisis
After the military bombardment by Israeli forces, British and French forced invaded Egypt, to regain control of the Suez Canal which had been nationalised by the Egyptian leader Nasser. The attack was heavily criticised by leaders of the World. Especially America because Soviet Union had offered support to Egypt. The British and French had to withdraw and a UN peace keeping force was sent to establish order. -
Hungarian Revolution. Part 2
The Soviet tanks returned on the 4th of November encircling Budapest. The Prime Minister: Imre Nagy made a world podcast that Hungary was attacked by the soviet Union and calling for aid. Hungary fell under Russia on 10th of November 1956. -
Space Race
USSR Sputnik II carried the Laika dog, Belka and Strelka. The first living creature to go into space. -

Bay of Pigs Invasion
Cuban force exiles, trained by the CIA, aided by the US government attempted an attack to Cuba and overthrow the Communist government of Fidel Castro. The attempt failed. -
Berlin Wall
Berlin Wall was built and borders sealed between East and West Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
United States spy plane reported sighting the construction of Soviet nuclear missile base in Cuba. President Kennedy set up a naval blockade and demanded the removal of the missiles. War was averted when the Russians agreed on 28th October to remove the weapons. The United States agreed not to invade Cuba. -
JFK Assassination
JF Kennedy was assassinated while on a visit to Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder but there has always been speculation that he was not a lone killer, and that there may have been communist or CIA complicity. -
USSR
Nikita Krushchev removed from the office. He was replaced by Leonid Brezhnev. -
Vietnam War (July)
150,000 US troops sent to Vietnam. -
Soviet Union invasion of Czechoslovakia.
Warsaw Pact forces entered Czechoslovakia to stop the reforms known as the "Prague Spring" instigated by Alexander Dubcek. When he refused to halt his programme of reforms Dubcek was arrested. -
Space Race
United States launched Apollo 8 - first orbit of the Moon.
20th of July 1969. US Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong has became the first man on the Moon. -

United States troops were sent to go to Cambodia by the President Richard Nixon. -
Four Power Agreement on Berlin
The 4 power agreement was made between Russia, United States of America, Great Britain and France reconfirmed the rights and responsibilities of those countries with regard of Berlin. -

SALT stands for "Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty" signed between the United States and USSR -

Cambodia Killing Fields
Khmer Rouge attacked and took control of Cambodia. Any supporters of the former regime, anyone with links or supposed links to foreign governments as well as many intellectuals and professionals were executed in a genocide that became known as the "killing fields". -

The Velvet Revolution, it is also known as the Gentle Revolution, was a series of peaceful protest in Czechoslovakia that led to the overthrow of the Communist government. -
Malta Summit
This was a meeting between Mikhail Gorbachev and George H W Bush reversed much of the provisions of the Yalta Conference 1945. It is seen by some as the beginning of the end of cold war. -
Romanian Revolution (December 16 - 25 )
Riots broke out which culminated in the overthrow and execution of the Leader Ceausescu and his wife. -

Eastern and Western Germany were reunited as one country. -
