Yalta Conference
The conference was an agreement to govern Germany jointly between the British, French, Soviet, and America. It included the Big Three which are Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. The gaspire theme showed is Geography because each leader wanted a share of Germany. The Yalta Conference impacted the war because Germany was now a shared nation between the 4 countries. -
Truman Doctrine
The doctrine was about the Greece and Turkey at risk into falling into communist insurgents. Truman requested $400 million from Congress in aid to both countries.The gaspire theme is social. This caused conflict because the governments wanted different types of government. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
The blockade of Berlin began on June 24, 1948. From June 1948 to May 1949, the Us and British planes airlifted 1.5 million tons of supplies to residents of west Berlin. The gaspire theme used here is social because Soviet union wanted to create poverty and suffrage in Berlin, but the US helped avoid this. This was a conflict but the Soviets gave in after 200,000 flights. -
Marshall Plan
ON June 5, the U.S secretary of State George Marshal proposed a massive aid program to rebuild Europe from the ravages of World War II. Nearly $13 billion in the U.S aid was sent to Europe from 1948 to 1952. The gaspire theme used is Economy because money was involved a lot. The countries did not want any ties with the US. The Marshal Plan impacted the war because Europe now had funding to start rebuilding what was lost from the war. -
COMECON
Comecon stands for the Council for Mutual Economics Assistance. This was the Soviet response to the Marshall Plan, established in 1949. The purpose was to provide aid to communist nations so that they would not take money from the US.Gaspire theme used was Economic because Comecon had to do with money and economy. Comecon impacted the Cold War because it was like a retaliation and the main purpose was to spread their form of government in order to prevent others to seek for U.S help. -
NATO
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.They pledged to protect and support one another if every attacked. It includes the USA, Canada, Britain, France, and 8 others. The gaspire theme used here is political because the leaders of countries isolated other leaders. NATO impacted the Cold War because if anyone was attacked, the countries acted as if they were all attacked as one giant nation. -
Korean War
The war begun when the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel in 1950 in hope to unite Korea as a Communist nation. As a result, the UN and USA forces came to the aid of South Korea. Communist Chain and the USSR gave aid, military support, and weapons to support the North Korea. The gaspire theme is geographical because North and South Korea got separated at the 38th parallel on the map. This impacted the Cold War because the communist run North Korea didn't accomplish taking over the South. -
Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union led military alliance and was established in 1955. They forced 7 eastern European satellites to join and any attempt to leave the pact would be seen as disloyal.The gaspire theme used is Political because loyalty was important.The Warsaw Pact impacted the Cold War because it showed how powerful the Soviet Union was, since they forced the 7 other satellites to join their pact. -

For over half a century, the US and Soviet union competed to be the best in the field of space exploration. The race began because both countries wanted to be able to fire weapons like intercontinental Ballistic Missiles across the ocean. The gaspire theme used here is Intellectual because the two countries were in a technology competition, which caused friction and an environment full of pride. This furthered the development of the war because whoever was first in space had an advantage. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
In the summer of 1962, the Soviet Union sent nuclear missiles into Cuba. The U.S blockaded the island of Cuba in October 1962. U.S president John F. Kennedy demanded that the missiles be removed with the threat of war. On October 28th, 1962, Khrushchev removed the missiles and nuclear was was avoided. The gaspire theme used here is Intellectual because the soviet union wanted to prove that they were advanced and they had better tech. This furthered the beginning of competition. -
SALT
After multiple meetings called the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, Nixon and Brezhnev signed the SALT1 treaty, This five-year agreement, limited to 1972 levels the number of intercontinental ballistic and submarine-launched missiles each country could have. In 1975, 33 nations joined the US and the Soviet Union in signing a commitment to detente and cooperation, the Helsinki Accords. The gaspire is political because the treaty caused both countries to limit their ICBM's, which showed power. -
Glasnost
Gorbachev realized that economic and social reforms could not occur without a free flow of ideas and info, which lead to the creation of the glasnost. It was a new policy allowing people in the Soviet Union to openly criticize the government. The gaspire theme is intellectual because Gorbachev is trying to innovate with this policy.This furthered the development of the war because it allowed people to create tension between the government and the citizens. -
Berlin Wall Collapses
The official purpose of this Berlin Wall was to keep Western “fascists” from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state, but it primarily served the objective of stemming mass defections from East to West. Then in 1989, when the head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they pleased, ecstatic crowds started to damage it. End of the Soviet Union
Due to the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, Yeltsin was elected president of Russia, Then in the summer of 1991 Yeltsin had attempted to help Gorbachev. In December 25, 1991 Gorbachev resigned as USSR president. The gaspire is political because it shows how the power transfer from Gorbachev to Yeltsin. This furthered the war because it was the end of the Soviet Union, and the beginning to what we know today as Russia. -
Interview with Carla
According to the interview, I learned that the Cold War was a battle between the US and Soviet Union. She was in fear of possible war. She has not thought about the war until 2017 with the intervention of our president and Russia. She thought the Soviets were evil and thought they had ideas that alien to democracy. In addition, not a lot of trust with the government and their leaders. When the war ended, it was an exciting time and she felt a level of optimism about the future.
