Soviets invade Afghanistan
The Soviets invaded Afghanistan aiming to bolster the newly established communist regime and suppress the Mujahideen rebellion against the government. They sent in some 30,000 troops and toppled the short-lived presidency of People's leader Hafizullah Amin. -
