United Nations
The United Nations was created because they wanted to be someone that other countries could call on for help. Something they helped with was the Republic of China becoming one of the 5 permanent members of the Security Council. The Security Council voted against letting the Communists have a seat in the delegate, so the Soviet Union boycotted the Security Council. So when the United Nations needed the Soviet Union’s help during that time(The Korean War), they didn’t help(The United Nations) -
Potsdam Confrence
This conference was where leaders Truman, Churchill, and Stalin discussed peace settlements, but never made an official treaty. The main discussion was about control over Germany, they discussed battle against Japan. In the end Germany was split in 4, and divided among the U.S., Soviet Union, France, and Great Britain, they were allowed to take reparations from their part. NATO
NATO's a treaty where there is political and military alliance between the United States, Canada, and European countries (NATO). These countries wanted protection from the Soviet Union. Western Europe was also admitted into NATO, alarming the Soviet Union, and creating the Warsaw pact. NATO also decided that Nuclear weapons weren't needed because the Soviet Union would come back strongly. This treaty happened because the countries needed alliance to make countries equal in power and force. -
The Chinese Revolution 1
This was a revolution that happened because The People’s Republic of China was created, and they completed the process of government upheaval in China. Nationalists and Communists parties met to discuss a “post-war” government. Both sides wanted a democracy, and equality for Chinese political parties, but that agreement didn’t last for long and lead to a civil war. -
The Chinese Revolution 2
The United States of America decides to come in and help the Nationalist Government prevent communist control over China. The communist side was very strong, and upheld. The U.S. wanted to stop helping the Nationalist because they were losing, but nobody in the U.S. wanted to be accused of the loss of China to communism so they continued to help. This revolution happened because nobody wanted China to be communist(The Chinese Revolution). -
Korean War
Korea was split after Japan had lost World War I. North Korea was controlled by the S.U., and South Korea was controlled by the U.S., since they couldn’t decide if Korea should be communist or not. North Korea attacked South Korea with the help of the S.U. North Korea retreated because U.S. forces were very strong. Then started the invasion of South Korea on North Korea. South Korea was driven back by China. Everyone came to an agreement to keep the borders up to keep peace(“Korean War”). -
Vietnam War 1
This war started because Vietnam had won it’s independence but half of Vietnam wanted to be communist(North) and half didn’t(South). So Vietnam was split into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Communist people in South Vietnam started to rebel against Diem(South Vietnam leader), and soon North Vietnam helped the rebels. Diem was already losing power to the South Vietnamese people because since he was Roman Catholic he killed a lot of Buddhist people in South Vietnam. -
Vietnam War 2
Soon South Vietnam overthrew and murdered him. By now Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the Philippians are on South Vietnam’s side; communist Soviet Union, and China are on North Vietnam’s side. In 1964 North Vietnam attacks a U.S. warship and U.S. drops bombs on North Vietnam. Communists attack South Vietnam. The U.S.. North Vietnam and South Vietnam agree to stop fighting. In the end communist wins and Vietnam is united again as a communist country(“Vietnam War”) -
Warsaw Pact
With this pact the Soviet Union wanted protection from Germany, since they were rearmed and apart of NATO. The Soviet Union also wanted to strengthen its hold on Eastern Europe. At this time the Warsaw pact and NATO also declared they were “no longer adversaries” (Warsaw Pact). The main cause of this pact was for protection and power. -
Suez Crisis 1
America and Great Britain didn’t want to finance Egypt’s construction of the dam, as promised, because Egypt started growing a relationship with Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Because of this Egypt decided to take control of the Suez Canal company, which controlled what trades came through the river, and who Egypt traded with. -
Suez Crisis 2
The United States of America and Great Britain worried that Egypt would close down the canal, so Britain, France, and Israel work together to invade Egypt. The three countries lost the battle so Egypt kept control of the Canal. This happened because no one wanted to lose access to the Canal(“Suez Crisis”). -
Space Race/Sputnik
Sputnik’s the first space satellite launched by the S. U., it put them in the lead of what was soon to be called the “Space Race”. It came as a shock to the U.S. because, they believed they would be the first to launch a successful satellite. The U.S. races to make missiles, or satellites, just to be successful, but all end in failure. Finally, the U.S. succeeds in launching its first satellite, the Explorer, going deeper into space than Sputnik(“Sputnik”). -
Cuban Missile Crisis 1
In this crisis the United States of America and the Soviet Union are still fighting. The S.U. had recently installed nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba extremely close to the U.S.A. The United States and the Soviet Union agreed that the Soviet Union would remove the missiles from Cuba if the United States agreed to not invade Cuba. Later on an American U-2 spy plane flew over Cuba, and discovered another Soviet missile being assemble for installation. -
Cuban Missile Crisis 2
The missiles were close enough to the United States that if launched could hit Florida and Eastern U.S. territory. Kennedy (U.S. President at the time) assured the people of America that they would enforce a blockade of Cuba to prevent the Soviet Union from reaching Cuba. The Soviet Union was shut down on their way, and the missiles were removed along with the U.S.’s missiles in Turkey (“Cuban Missile Crisis”). -
Six Day War
Arab and Israel were having a series of wars. Before the war there was many attacks, such as Israel having an air war with Syria which lead to Israel shooting down 6 jets. Egyptian leader Nasser had been accused of hiding behind the U.N. stationed at Egypt’s border. This lead to a mutual alliance between Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. During war Israel captured the Gaza strip, and Sinai Peninsula. At the same time Jordan attacked West Jerusalem.The U.N. called for cease fire ending it(Six-Day War). -
Glasnost
Glasnost is the open discussion on political and social issues in the Soviet Union turning it into a democracy. The Soviet Union wants to maintain the status quo. The leader of the Soviet Union was Gorbachev and he believed that the path to economic recovery for them was ordinary citizens in the political process. In the end the power of the communist party in the Soviet Union was reduced. The purpose of the open discussion was to give people freedom to help the government(“Glasnost”). -
Perestroika
Perestroika means “restructuring”. The purpose of this was to restructure The Soviet Union’s political and economic policy. Gorbachev intended it to be a moderate program and a self-financed operation. Introduced voting for candidates, including non-communists.
