He worked hard to improve the Soviets way of life thru Glasnost and peaceful relations with U.S. President Reagan.He worked to bring the Cold War to an end by introducing democracy to the Soviet Union.

The U-2 spy plane incident was when a American U-2 spy plane was shot down in a soviet airspace. It was taking photos of the soviets and watching what they were up to. The U.S. was worried about the news getting out about what the were doing.

John F. Kennedy was president from January 1961 to November 1963. He served in the Navy and won the Naval and Marine Corps Medal of Honor. He served as a Massachuetts senator before becoming President. He was a democrat, and dealt with cold war issues like the Cuban Missile Crisis. He tried to make things better with the Soviets. He also supported the Civil Rights movement. He was killed in Dallas Texas in 1963.

In August 1961 the East Germans built a wall around Berlin. They no longer wanted the German people to get to the west and have democracy. It was taken down in November of 1989.

In October, 1962 the U.s. and the Soviet Union had a 13 day stand off. The Soviets placed nuclear weapons on Cuba, 90 miles from the U.S. President Kennedy put a Navy blockade around Cuba and threatened to use force if necessary. They finally reached an agreement to remove the missiles if the U.S. agreed to not attack Cuba. The U.S. also took missiles out of Turkey.

In February 1972, President Nixon went to China to meet with Chou en-Lai. They agreed to start a new and positive relationship in politics, and no more tension in the Asian Pacific region. This agreement made communist Russia weaker.

George Bush was the 43rd President of the U.S. from 2001-2009.He was the governor of Texas before that. He developed Homeland Security after a terrorist attack on the world trade center in September 2001. He tried to break up the Taliban in Afghanistan and went after Sudam Hussein in Iraq.

On December 26, 1991 the Soviet Union came to an end. It was now 15 separate countries. The communist rule was over and people celebrated freedom with a democratic system on the way. Gorbachev resigned and Boris Yeltsin took over with Gorbachev still involved.
