United nations: On June 26, 1945 in San Francisco, California 50 Nations, including the Soviet Union, signed a charter creating this organization. -

Afghanistan was close to the Middle East oil reserves of western powers and ports of the Indian Ocean; The soviets wanted to develop their interests in this area as there was lots if money to be made. -
