The Dark Ages- This act was made to prevent widespread discussion of communist proaganda.
-This clearly denied the freedom of speach for some people.
-No one seemed to care that this law was made for the sole purpose to be able to arrest individual activists from international trade unions -
Gouzenko Affair
Gouzenko Affair-Gouzenko was born in the soviet union in 1919 but moved to Canada in 1943.
-When he came he brought with him 109 documents on soviet esponage, he tried to warn Canadians but one would believe him. Finally the government realized he was telling the truth when his house got broken into in attempt to kidnap Gouzenko.
-After his almost abduction Gouzenko and his family went into hiding and stayed in hiding until he died, from natural causes, in 1982. -
Berlin Blockade
Berlin Blockade-The Soviet Union broke an agreement they had made with its former allies.
-The blockage was built to attempt to block all supply lines to west Berlin, but it failed when the Allies created an airlift to avoid the blockage all together.
-What the blockage did succeed to do was create tension between the Soviet Union and the Allies. Thust began the Cold War. -
Internation Alliances: NATO
-The Soviet Union were tyring their hardest to spread its communist system as far as possible, this made the United States, Canada and many other countries in western Europe concerned about national security.
- North Atlantic Treaty Organization or "NATO" was then created to ensure that the nations involved would have backup against further Soviet agression
- The Soviet Union got nervous about this agreement and so they created the Warsaw Pact -

"The Forgotten War" - The Korean War
-Communist China and communist North Korea decided to attack South Korea
- The US were the first to respond and go and help South Korea
-The UN members were told to "render every assistance " to South Korea
- 16 nations ended up aiding the war effort in South Korea, Canada ranked third in total aid to South Korea
-There was a truce made in 1953 meaning they had won the battle
- Soldiers were told to stay until late 1955 to make sure the truce maintained -
UN Peacekeeping : The Suez Crisis
Lester Pearson Audio Clips- The uneasy truce that was made a few years in the past between the Jews and the Arubs was broken in 1956
-Countries started to take sides and would make matters worst by selling weapons to both sides
-When egypt took control over the canal zone Britain, France and Isreal decleared war
- A solution was made by a Canadian named Lester Pearson
-His plan was to call immediate end to all shooting
- Pearson become Prime Minister of Canada in 1963 -
Sputnik and Canada's Space Program
- The Soviets lanched the first sputnik satellite that could be used to deliver a nuclear warhead to any spot in North America -The Americans then decided to built long-ranged missels and the Soviets found out and made them as well -Americans found out that the Soviets were building missels as well and so president Kennidy quickly imposed that they build a naval blockade to prevent the Soviets from delivering their missles -Soviets ended up turning back before reaching the blockade to avoid war

Pearson wins a Nobel Prize
Pearson won a Nobel Peace prize for his efforts to keep international peace mainly in the Suez Crsis. -
Continental Alliances: NORAD and DREW line
- In the 1950's the development of long-range missles capable of delivering a nuclear bomb 16000 km showed North America that they needed a better defense system -This is why they decided to create the North American Air Defense (NORAD) -The Distant Early Warning system was created soon afterwards (DEW)

Bomarc Missles and Nuclear Warheads in Canada
-John Diefenbaker deployed 56 American-made Bomarc missles in Quebec and Ontairo
-Intially the Canadian government accepted and the assignment to carry these missles but in the end did not end up carrying through witht their commitment
-Canada went back and forth with their desision to keep the nuclear warheads on Canadian soil but in the end decided it was not a good idea -
Avro Arrow and its Cancellation
Avro's Madian Flight- During this time the Conservatives were in office,John Diefenbaker, and recived the largest majority ever given to a Canadian Prime Minister
-They got these votes by promising Canadians a bright future with thousands of new jobs
-Deifenbaker decided to scrap the expensive Avro Arrow which was being developed and built by Canadians
-Scapping that project lost many Canadians their jobs which made the public mad becuase that was the exact opposite of what they had promised to get into office -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
- America was ready to pounce on Cuban territory and the Soviets were willing to bring in nuclear weapons to defend -The rest of the world did not want to see another bloody battle happen
- The US set up a naval blockage which presuaded the Soviets to go back on their plans to attack

The Canada-Soviet Hockey Series
- First international ice hockey competition Canada had been in since their dispute with the International Hockey Federation -It was tied between Canada and Russia with three wins each -In the final game with in the last few minutes Paul Henderson sccored the winning goal giving Canada the series -This boosted Canada's nation pride

Vietnam War & Draft Dodgers in Canada
Draft Dodgers-Canada had a pretty major part in this war as they were allies with the US so they had an agreement that made Canada help the United States
-Canada would help aid South Vietnam and would deliver secret messages between the US and Vietnam
- Many American men moved to Canada during this time due to their opposition to the war range -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
-Both peaceful and terribly violent
-marked the moment that time had run out for the soviet-supported dictatorships in Eastern Europe
- This is what caused the series of events of dictators resigning and surrendering -
The Fall of the Soviets
Soviets Collapse - The Soviets broke off into 15 seprate countries bringing the west to victory
-The day before, the Soviet President resigned, declaring his office extinct
-This was the end of the Cold War
