The Truman Doctrine
This document was created by Present Truman that said the US would help Greece and Turkey economically and militarily to stop the spread of communism. -
The Marshall Plan
This was a plan to help European nations after the great destuction of WW2. It called for $13 billion to be financed to Europe, but it was successful in the recovery of the European economy. (1948-1951) -
Creation of NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organiztion was created after the great destruction of WW2. It was meant to stop the expantion of communism from Germany and the Soviet Union and insure security of the Western Europe countires. This pact also reasurred that the countires in the agreement would come to eachothers aid if they were faced with foreign agression, This was the first peacetime agreement that the United States has been in other than what was in the Western Hemisphere. -
Soviets create and test nuclear bomb
The Soviet Union tests their first nuclear bomb. This is the begining of the Arms Race. This was a shock to the United States because no one was expecting the Soviets to have the capabilities of having nuclear weapons. -
The Korean War
After being separated into two different countires after WW2, the north being controled by Soviet Russia and the south by Ameria. The North invaded the South which resulted in the United Nations assistance of South Korea. This assistance got the United States heavily involved. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
This was a military treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. This pact was an agreement that any of these countries would come to eachothers aid if any of them were faced with a foreign attack. -
Soviet launch Sputnik
The launch of Sputnik started began the Space Age and started the Space Race. It was the first satellite that the Soviet Union launched into a low Earth orbit. -
Bay of Pigs
the Cuban exile originally planned to destroy Castor's air force so he would not be able to fight back against the invaders, but Castro found out about the plan and moved his planes. When the invasion on the Bay of Pigs began it was unseccessful and ended in disaster. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Berlin Wall was a division of West Berlin and East Germany. Its purpose was to keep east Germans from going to the West. This was a symbol of the division between communists and capitalist. After WW2 West Berlin set up a capitalist government which resulted in a huge economic growth. As for the East the living conditions were still bad so the immigration rate of people leaving to the West was very high, The wall was created to keep these people from fleeing. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
After the United states found out that the Soviet Union has nuclear missles on Cuba, the US and Soviet Union were in a stand off. The consern of these missles was so great because they were only 90 miles from the US shores. When JFK threatened to use military force if needed the Soviets came to an agreement that the missles would be removed if no invation would happen. -
US sends a man to the moon
After being launched from the Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969 the Apollo 11 entered he moons orbit on the 19th. Neil Armstrong turned on the cameras that sent the images to Earth so billions of people could see the history unfold from their livingrooms.This was the event that set the US ahead in the Space Race. -
Vietnam War
The nationalsist powers were trying to control Vietnam with a communtist rule, and the United states were trying to stop it. Before the war the French and Japanese were occupying Vietnam, but France was suffuring severe losses so they had to withdraw from the fight under a peacefull agreement that also resulted in Vietnam being split over the 17th parallel witht the northbeing communist and the south being non-communist. -
1980 Olympic Hockey game
This olimpic game at Lake Placid was aslo called "the Miracle on Ice". The US team that was made up of unprofesional players defeted the Soviet team who were the wold champions. Because of the tention that the cold war brought, the close game made emotions high. -
German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
The reunification of Germany and the fall of the Berlin Wall is when the Berlin Wall that was separating East and West Berlin was taken down, and the citizens were no longer being stopped from immigrating to the west. The fall of the wall was just as if not more memorable and segnificant than when it was put up. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
After the Sovet Union split into fifteen different couniesthe USSR fell. This turned out to be a big victory for the anti communist countries, and ended the Cold War.
