  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was created by US president Harry Truman. It stated that the U.S would support Greece and Turkey with ecominic and military aid to prevent them falling to the Soviet Union. This is considered the start of the Cold War.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was created to help Europe rebuild after World War II. This plan was created by George Marshall who was secretary of state at the time. It also helped prevent communism from gaining a stronghold in war torn countries. The marshall plan was also called the European Recovery Act.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    NATO stands for North Alantic Treaty Organization. This organization is an alliance of 28 different countries. Nato plays an important role in crisis management and peacekeeping.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    The Korean War started when North Korean troops invaded South Korea. Truman ended up ordering naval and air support for South Korea. While North Korea was backed up by China. In June 1950 North Korean troops invade South Korea and capture the capital. Then in September 1950 North Koreans push South Koreans and UN troops south to the perimeter of Pusan, near the coast of the Yellow Sea. Under MacArther, UN troops make a two- pronged movement that drives North Koreans out of South Korea.

    Creation of Warsaw Pact
    Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact in reponse to letting Germany into NATO in October 1954. The Warsaw Pact was a treaty between the eight communist states in existence during the Cold War.

    Vietnam War

    The Vietnam war was a long and costly conflict against the communists. North Vietnam was a communist country and South Vietnam was about to join them. More then3 million people died in the Vietnam war. In 1969, there was more then 500,000 people who invovled in this conflict. With more and more people opposing the war, president Nixon ordered all the troops out in 1973. In 1975, the communist forces took control of South Vietnam, ending the war and unifying the country.

    When the Soviet Union lauched Sputnik in 1957, it frightened everybody mainly the United States. Sputnik was a sateittle orbiting Earth with technology said to be superior then the United States. With that the Soviet Union began to lead the Space Race.The president had responded to Sputnik by speeding up the United States space program.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    On the night of April 17,1961, about 1,400 cuban exiles landed on the southern coast at Bahia de Cochinos. A small advance group of Americans were sent to distract Castro's forces from never reaching shore. But once the commando unit finally landed they were met with 20,000 Cuban troops, backed up by the Soviet tanks and jet aircrafts. The troops killed some and took others as prisioners. Kennedy felt embrassed and negotiated with Castro for the release of surviving commandos.

    There was rumors but nobody expected the Berlin Wall to go up as quick as it did, The wall had appeared overnight, while most people in Berlin were sleeping.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis started on October 16th, 1962 til October 28, 1962. This crisis called for the withdrawl of Soviet Union's nuclear missiles from Cuba. Also, the withdrawal of certain United States nuclear missles from Turkey and Italy. Because of the crisis United States made an agreement with Soviet Union that the United States would never invade Cuba without direct provocation. At the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Cuba went on embargo from the United States.

    This war had started on June 5th, 1967. It was fought by Israel, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. The war began by Israel launching surprise bomb attacks on Egyptain Airfields. Israel had won this war, taking contol of the gaza strip and Sinai Penninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and West Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Height from Syria
  • US sends a man to the moon

    US sends a man to the moon
    On July 20th, 1969, the United States sent a man to the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. He was sent up there on the spaceship called Apollo 11. Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon only minutes after Neil.

    On Feburary 22, 1980, during the winter olypmics, the United States and teh USSR battled for the world championship. This game was held in Lake Placid, New York. With 8,500 attending the pressure was on the United States to win. The ending score was 4-3 United States had won. This game had been nicknamed Miracle on Ice.

    The fall of the berlin wall happened as suddenly as its rise. Suddenly on November 9, 1989 Günter Schabowski, a government offical made an annoucement to tear down the wall. People were in shock that the wall was finally coming down. It was a huge celebration.

    In December, the Soviet flag flw for the last time. On the 26th, Soviet Union had collasped and turned back into Russia.
