The USSR sucsessfully detonates a nuclear bomb. Both super powers now have nuclear abilities. The founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a millitary alliance between Western nations. -

The Soviets create a response to NATO: the warsaw pact. A military alliance with the countries under the influence of the Soviet Union. -

A series of anti-Soviet revolts in Eastern Europe results in the Hungarian Revolution. The Revolution is crushed by the Soviet Army. -

The Us begins its long war in vietnam. -

Fidal Castro becomes the leader of Cuba he is a communist. -

American president John F Kennedy launches an invasion of Cuba.
The attempt to take back Cuba, known as The Bay of Pigs invasion, fails. In August, USSR closes Eats German borders and begins construction of the Berlin war. -

Thhe Cuban missile crisis. Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba threathen to start nuclear war. -

The year of protest in America and Eastern Europe. The vietnam war and in Easter Europe against Soviet control. The protest again in Eastern is called: prague spring and the Soviet used military force to break it down. -

A series of anti-communist movements in Eastern Europe. The most prominent is poland's solidarity movement. Unlike earlier attempts at reform and revolt, these are not put down by soviet force. -

Mikjail Gorbachev becomes the Soviet leader. He will introduce a lossening of Soviet controls that will lead to the falling apart of the soviet union. -

a wave of sucsessful independence movements in Eastern Europe.
Communist governments fall across the soviet bloc. Poland,Hungary,Czechoslovakia, etc. In 1989 the Berlin walls falls. In 1990 , Germany unites. -

Boris Yeltsin elected president of Russia. -

The warsaw pact comes to a end.
