The Marshall Plan
The Marshall plan was a Eurpean recovery plan for their economy. This plan was announced at Harvard University by the Secretary of State George C. Marshall. The Soviet Union saw this plan as an attempt to interfere with their internal affairs. The Soviets did however prevent Poland and Czecoslovakia from participating in the recovery; even though both nations wanted to be involved. -
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This was like the Soviet Unions Warsaw Pact. This was with the US as well as most of the western Europian countries. In a similar sense to the Warsaw Pact, if one of these nations gets attacked or threatened all the other countries will retaliate in the form of a united military. -
Korean War
North Korea sends 75,000 soldiers on an attack of South Korea. this was the first military invasion during the Cold War time. Come July American troops entered on behalf of South Korea. American officials saw it as a physical war against forces of communism and were fighting for containment. In '53 the fighting ended with over 5 million causalties, because no treaty was signed the war technically is still going. -
Vietnam War
The US becomes involved in the war betwwen France and Vietnam over Vietnam becoming communist. This will lead to Vietnam being split along the 17th parallel into a communist and democratic side similar to Korea now. Aftr a while the US will withdraw because of the realization that it is not our war to fight nor be involved in. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was formed as a treaty which established a mutual defense that would ultimatley be controlled by the Soviet Union. This pact gave the Soviet's control of their sattelite nationa which included Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. What the pact meant is that if a single nation listed was attacked or threatened, al the nations listed would retaliate and protect each other with a large united military force. -
Soviets launch Sputnik
The Soviet Union launches the first sattelite into orbit called "Sputnik". This sattelite orbited the Earth once every hour and a half(aprox.) traveling at 18,000 miles per hour. -
Bay Of Pigs invasion
John F. Kenedy gathers Cuban exiles and provides them with weapons and training. These trainng camps are set up in Guatemala. The idea is to invade Cuba using guerilla warfare and take out Castro once and for all. This backfires and emabasses the US when the 1400 exiles we trained are met by 20,000 Cuban troops who kill just over 100 of the exiles, while the ones still alive surrender. -
Berlin Wall goes up
Constructed in the dark of night, this wall divided east and west Germany. The west was capitalist while the east was communist with the Soviet Union. This wall would remain constructed for 28 years to keep people from fleeing to the democratic side(East) Germany -
Cuban Missile Crisis
JFK announces to the country that US spy planes has spotted Soviet missiles in Cuba. This will lead to a military quarentine of Cuba. The missile discovered were "medium range missiles" capable of traveling around most of the US. Khrushchev(Soviet leader) requested that US missile Bases in Turkey were dismantled, ultimatley this was the begining of the end of the crisis. -
Fidek Castro comes to power in Cuba
Castro would be Cuba's first all Communist leader to assume power. He ruled over Cuba for nearly five decades before handing off power to his younger brother. In this time he reduced illiteracy as well as racism and improved health care -
Six Day War
A war lasting six days begins as Israel rsponds to Arab forceds building up along the border by attacking Eygpt and Syria. Durign this the Israelites will decline a proposal by the UN and annex East Jerusalem. -
US invades Grenada
Codenamed Operation Fury, th United States launches a full invasion on Grenada because it was beleived to be holding runaway Soviets can Cubans -
Berlin Airlift
When the Soviets attempt to take Berlin, a German city for themselves, the US and its allies fly in to Berlin and supply their secotrs with supplies. -
Fall of The Berlin Wall
The wall that had for several years seperated communist Germany from the non Communist side is taken down. When The East German Communist Party announced that people could cross the wall at their own will, crowds flocked to the wall. Among these crowds some people crossed the wall while other brought tools such as hamers and chisels to tear the wall down. Since then Germany has again become one nation united. -
Fal Of The Soviet Union
11 Soviet republics (Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) decided they would no longer be part of the Soviet Union. A few days earlier they declared their Independence from the USSR.
