The G.I. Bill provided college for returning WWII veterans. It also provided one year of unemployment compensation. This was very good so that the veterans can get back on their feet again. -
Yalta Conference
The Yalta confrence was the second waretime meeting of the Brittish Prime Minister Winston Churchill, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet Preimer Joseph Stalin. The three men had a confrnece and agreed to damand Germany's surrender and planned for a post-war world. -
V E Day
This day is a holiday celebrated on May 8th 1945 to celebrate victory in Europe. It represents World War II ending in Europe. They put out flags and banners and celebrated the defeat of the Nazi war machine. -
Potsdam Confrence
The Potsdam confrence was the third meeting of the three nations leaders, Winston Churchhill, Joseph Stalin and Harry S. Truman. They were all disscusing the postwar fate of Germany. -
Hiroshima
The U.S. dropped the first attomic bomb on Hiroshima. It was durin the final stage of WWII. The result was allied victory. -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine is a U.S. foreign policy established by president Truman saying the U.S. would protect democracies throughout the world. The doctrine pledged that the United States would fight Communism worldwide. -
Marshall plan
The Marshall plan is a U.S. plan to rebuild Western Europe after WWII. The U.S. pumped billions of dallors into Western Europe for food and supplies. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift is where President Truman decided to avoid the blockade by flying in food and other supplies to the needy people of West Berlin. Sometimes there would be over 5,000 tons of supplies arriving. This showed that the U.S. is really on top. -
NATO
NATO means North Atlantic Treaty Association. Its a millitary alliance. NATO only has 28 members. The members are all in Europe and North America. The head of the NATO is Jens Stoltenberg. -
Sputnik
Sputnik was the world first space salellite. It was launched by the Soviet Union. It was the size of a beach ball. It was the start to the space race between the Americans and the Soviet Union. -
Sputnik 2
Sputnik 2 sent the first living animal to space. The animal was a Soviet Space dog. The name of the dog was Laika. The dog died a few hours later after launch. -
U-2 Incident
The U-2 incident happened when a the Soviet surface shot down a U.S. spy plane. This happened when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the U.S. The pilot Francis Gary Powers was on a top secret mission and flew deep inside Russia to photograph territory. -
Berlin wall
The Berlin wall was a wall that circled Berlin. The wall was built because the Germans fled to the democratic west, so the communist east Germans built a wall. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was where two superpowerd became to the closest nuclear conflict. John F. Kennedy was the U.S. president at the time. The Kennedy administration faced its most serious forgien conflict at this time. This happened in October 1962. -
Man on the moon (Space Race)
The Space race was a race to space involving the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The Soviet's launched the worlds first space satellite, Sputnik. America was scared for the Soviet millitary control of space so the U.S. quickly launch a rocket. They raced to the moon. America got mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin on the moon. They were the first men on the moon.
