Yalta Conference
This was a meeting between Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin. Together they discussed what would happen at the end of the War. They discussed the Partitioning of Germany, Fate of Poland, The United Nations, and the repairing of Germany. -
Potsdam Conference
This conference divided Germany and Austria into 4 zones. It was also decided that the Capital of Germany, which was Berlin, would be divided into 4 zones. Also, Korea was o be divided into American and Soviet Zones. Lastly, the Russian Polish border was determined. -
Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The United States dropped the first 2 atomic bombs over 2 Japanese cities. The 2 bombs were named the Little Boy and the Fat Man. After dropping these 2 bombs, Japan surrendered. -
Marshall Plan
This was the United States offering economical aid to any European Countries. Stalin did not like this plan and any countries on the Eastern bloc who considered accepting would face serious consequences. This aid was only given to the Western countries because of Stalin. -
NATO was Formed
NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The countries that were in this are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This created a stronger tie between the United States and Europe. -
Hungarian Revolution
This began as a Hungarian protest against communist rule in Budapest. Soviet tanks entered Budapest which soon resulted in introduction to democracy. freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. There was then a world broadcast that Hungary was under attack from the Soviet Union. Hungary fell to Russia on November 10, 1956. -
Suez Crisis
British and French forces invade Egypt to regain control of the Suez Canal. This Canal had been nationalized by the Egyptian leader Nasser. The Us leaders were heavily criticized because Russia offered to support Egypt. -
Sputnik
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched this into low Earth orbit. It was 58 cm in diameter and it had four external radios to detect pulses. -
U-2 Incident
This happened during Dwight D. Eisenhower's time in office. The U-2 incident happened when the Soviet Union shot down one of the US spy planes. They also captures the pilot of the plane. This later led to the first "spy swap" between the US and the USSR. -
Space Race
The United States and the Soviet Union were both trying to have the first person in space. The Soviet Union launched the first satellite into space, the Sputnik. Later on, the Russians landed the first person in space, which was Yuri Alekseyvich Gagarin. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was made out of concrete and barb wire. The Berlin Wall was built by the government to keep the East Berliners from going over to the West side. The Berlin Wall symbolized the lack of freedom if you are communist. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
A US sky plane spotted a missile base in Cuba that belonging to the Soviet Union. President Kennedy then set up a naval blockade and demanded the removal of the missiles. The Russians agreed to get rid of the missile, so the United States did not invade Cuba. -
JFK Assassination
JF Kennedy was assassinated while visiting Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder. Some suspect that others may have been involved but no further actions were taken after Oswald was arrested. -
Malta Summit
This was a meeting between US president George H. W. Bush and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. This was just weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Some people would say this was the beginning of the end of the Cold War. -
End of the Soviet Union
On this day the Soviet hammer and sickle flag lowered for the last time over the Kremlin. This officially granted self-governing independence to the republicans of the Soviet Union. It was the result of the declaration number 142-H of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.
