When Stalin died, Khrushchev had positioned himself as a possible successor, later becoming the head of the Communist Party. He has a complicated relationship with the west, being a believer in communism; however; he prefered a peaceful co-existence with capitalist countries. -

During the Cuban Missile Crisis there was a standoff between the U.S. and the Soviet Union due to the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba. It was feared that the world was on the brink of a Nuclear war, as Pres. Kennedy explained his decision to enact a blockade in Cube. The war was avoid in agreement that the Soviet the missile in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba. -
The Prague Spring Ends
The Prague Spring was a period of time when the government Czechoslovakia wanted to democratise the nation and lessen the control Moscow had. This period ended when the Soviet Union invaded and removed the leader, Alexander Dubcek. The Brezhnev doctrine then followed, stating that Russia has the right to use military force to maintain strict rules. -

It was a bilateral treaty between the U.S. and the Soviet Union on the reduction of strategic weapon arms. It expired on 2009 with the option of extending it.
