  • The Atomic Bomb

    The Atomic Bomb
    The Atomic Bomb occured on WW2 August, 9th, 1945. The United States of America decided large atomic bombs on Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The reason why the bombs were droped was because the President of the U.S was advised by some of his advisers that any attempts to invade Japan would put America in danger, so instead they decided to order new weaons to end WW2.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    Gouzenko Affair
    Igor Gouzenko was the Curk of the Soviet Embassey. Genzenko helped expose a Soviet spy in Canada back in 1945. There was a total of 18 people arrested and convicted of spying which were accused of trying to find or take instructions of the Atomic Bomb. THis was the first time that Canadians have proof of being spied on which brought us in further.
  • Formation of the United Nations

    Formation of the United Nations
    Formed after WWII and its goal was collective security. They origionally had 51 members including Canada. Focused on negotiation and meditation but given 3 powers, condemnation, sanctions and military. Canada was also recognized has a country with the best at keeping peace.
  • Formation of NATO

    Formation of NATO
    A military alliance of Western nations set up in opposition to the Soviets in 1949. Countries involved included Canada, US and 10 other European countires. Canada's obligation was to meet military commitments to NATO, Canadian soldiers were permanetly stationed in Europe in a state of war readiness, all members agreeed on Nuclear weapons used if necessary and was last resort.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    It was UN's first test to maintain peace. Korea concured Japan in WWII and the Soviet Union ocuppied north half of the country. They then established a communist government. North Korea became supported by communist China and attack South Korea. Canada sent 27000 soilders to South Korea. The war ended with a truce and a peace sign was created but never signed.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The war began in 1954 after the rise of Ho Chi Minh and his communist Viet Minh party. North Vietnam acted as a backdrop of the cold war between the two global superpowers, and was supported by the Soviet Union, China and other communist allies. There was a casuilty of 3 million people, including the death of 58,000 Americans. The canadians involved were 30,000 volunteers to fight in South Vietnam, we also helped with secret missions testing, arms production but we never actuallybecame involved.

    NATO was made up of Large Eastern European nations allied with the Soviet Union. They aimed at protecting Soviet countries if they were attacked by NATO.
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    A water way connected the mediterranean and Red Sea, which were previously owned by British and French. Egyptian President Nasser decided he wanted to take the canal. Isreal, British and French didn't like the idea so they attacked. Soviet Union threatened to send missles to support Eygpt. LesserBPearson sent out all foregin troops from Egypt and replaced them with UNEF peace keepers. Kept peace settlement until it reached diplomatically. It was the first time sending peace keepers &adverted war
  • Formation of NORAD

    Formation of NORAD
    Created for a defence of North America from Soviet Missiles and included fighter forces, missile bases and air defence radar. Joined American and Canadian fighter, millile and radar units in a mountian in Colorado to protect them from attacks. Dew ines were used for early warnings across Canadian Artict in 1950 and 1957. American militaty personnel were stationed on Canadian soil for first time which made a lot of Canadians worried.

    It was cancelled because costs were too high and the inablility to sell the arrows to Europe or the US. Canada's involvement was one of the greatest achievements.
  • Rise & fall of Berlin Wall

    Rise & fall of Berlin Wall
    Berlin became divided into 4 zones after the war and Satlin became angry over the small part of Berlin given to him. In 1961 huge numbers of skilled workers crossed to the west side of Berlin due to East German's economy about to collapse. Berlin wall was built as a physical and symoblic barrier between both East and West of Berlin. The wall came down in 1989 and signalled the end of the Cold war.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    Fidel Castro used gorilla warfair to lead a revulotion in Cuba. Castro would kill/exile any political enemies. Soviets steped in with massive aid and gained foodhold off us shores. U.S tried to impose a trade embargo but it didn't exactly work. Castro then decided to declare undying alegence to soviet foreign policy.13 day stand off between the U.S.A and USSR. Kennedy challenges USSR and quarentines Cuba with Naval blockage. Leader offered to remove missles for a promise US not invade Cuba.
  • SALT Treaty

    SALT Treaty
    The US learned that the Soviet Union had embarked on a intercontinental ballisitc missile(ICBM) buildup designed to reach parity with US. President Johnson said that the Soviet Union began to construct a Ballistic missile defense system in Moscow. This ABM could allow oneside to launch first strike. Therefore johnson called for Strategic arm limitation talks or SALT. SALT agreement was signed on May 26 1972.

    The SDI also known as Star Wars, was a program initated on March 23 under President Ronald Reagan. The intent of this program was to develop a sophisticated anti- ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the Soviet Union.

    The Soviet hammer and flag was lowered for the last time over Kremlin and became replaced by the Russian Tricolor. Eariler in the day, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned his post as president of the Soviet Union, leaving Boris Yeltsin as president of the new independent Russian State
