Yalta Conference
This was a conference where Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill planned the final stages of World War II and agreed to the territorial division of Europe. Slain promises that Europe will be free, and allowed to make all of their own decisions -
Nuclear Arms Race
Started after the Manhattan project, it was a competition between U.S (NATO) and the USSR (Warsaw Pact) to create the strongest, deadliest nuclear weapons. -
Potsdam Conference
After the surrender of Germanyand end of WWII, this conference occured involving the same three men. Here, they talked about the future of Germany and Poland. Stalin goes against his own word and decides not to let countries be free but to be a buffer zone. -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism. -
Russian Blockade of Berlin
The Soviet Union blockaded the US and UK, intended to force negotiations over the division and future of Germany. This attempt was a failure because of the airlift/ -
Marshall Plan
This was also known as the European Recovery Program. This called for assistance in restoring a bad economy & land of Euro. cities. This was a sucessful plan. The U.S gave moneyn to countries to avoid communism. -
Berlin Airlift
An airlift that supplied food and fuel to the people of west Berlin after the Soviet Union blocked off land to access to Berlin. This was succesfull. -
Korean War
War between North Korea, aided by Communist China vs. South Korea, aided by the United States and other United Nations members to form a United Nations armed force -
Rosenberg Spy Case
Started by the FBI arrestimg Julius Rosenberg conspiracy to transmit classified military information to the Soviet Union. He was found guilty and was penalized with death sentence. -
Vietnam War
North Vietnamese war with South Viet. where the U.S. helped the South because of the fact they were anti-communist. -
Hungarian Uprising
When many Hungarian officials were killed because of Hungarians opposing to communist government. Tanks were called in to help prevent further action which really just made relations worse. -
U-2 Crisis
Occured when a U–2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union.The incident worsened East/ West relations during the Cold War. -
Bay of Pigs
Invasion of Cuba by the United States intended to spark a rebellion against Castro whos regime was to threat U.S interests in that region. The result was a propaganda victory for Castro and embarrasment for the U.S. -
Construction of Berlin Wall
This was a barrier created by East Germany to cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany along with East Berlin. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
When the United States confronts the Soviet Union for the missile sites in Cuba. Khrushchev had placed them there. President Kennedy set up a naval blockade so he could be forced to get rid of the missile sites which he did. -
Prague Spring
Period of liberalization under Dubcek in Czechoslovakia, he instituted industrial and agricultural reforms to guarentee civil rights. -
Tet Offensive
A battle between Vietcong & North Vietnamese vs. U.S. and South Vietnamese. The Communist had won this battle leaving the U.S. at it's first loss in war. -
Detente
The easing of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. This was created by Richard Nixon mainly so communism could be contained. -
Fall of South Vietnam
The collapse occured because of Vietnam's political/military fields for they were organized and planned well. -
Perestroika
The restructing of the Soviet government and it's economy -
Regan Doctrine
A strategy created by President Reagan to oppose the Soviet Union which only lasted less than a decade until the end of the Cold War. -
Collapse of Berlin Wall
When this occured the Cold War basically came to an end. This made the West available in the middle of the East. -
End of USSR
All fifteen republics of the Soviet Union as independent states. The only way to revive the economy, in the 1980s, Soviet - Gorbachev began a process to increasing political liberalization in the communist one-party state.
