Berlin Blockade
June 24, 1948 - May 12, 1949. This event involved France, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and the United States. Joseph Stalin made a blockade, cutting off all land and river transit between western berlin and western Germany. This prevented trade and transport. The Allies had a massive airlift that helped aid West Berlin. For me, this is ranked 9/11. -
Korean War
June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953. Members of this event were China, North Korea, South Korea, the United States, and the Soviet Union. North Korea and the Soviet Union invaded South Korea. They were supported by the United States. This was a very bloody war and after the long battle, it ended in a stalemate. For me, this is ranked 3/11. -
Vietnam War
November 1, 1955 - April 30, 1975. Members of this war were the United States, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam. North Vietnam was under communist rule and wanted South Vietnam to join them. The United States helped South Vietnam to not join the North because the United States did not want communism spreading. For me, this is ranked 2/11. -
Suez Canal Crisis
July 25, 1956 - March 1957. Countries in this war were Egypt, France, Israel, and the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom, Israel and France invaded Egypt to regain control of the Suez Canal. The United Kingdom and France were forced to cease fire and Egypt was granted sovereignty of the canal. For me, this is ranked 6/11. -
Space Race
October 4, 1957 - July 20, 1969. Members of this event were the United States and the USSR. Both countries realised how missiles could become like rockets. This made them both start to compete for who can end up on the moon first. The United States was the first ones on the moon. For me, this is ranked 1/11. -
U-2 Incident
May 1, 1960. Countries in this event were the Soviet Union and the United States. This started because a United States U-2 plane was shot down above the Soviet Union. The plane was piloted by Francis Gary Powers. The Soviets believed it was a spy plane. This attack heavily affected the summit conference. For me, this is ranked 5/11. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
October 16, 1962 - October 29, 1962. Members of this event were the United States and the Soviet Union. Confrontation happened because a United States spy plane saw a Soviet Union Missile being built in Cuba. An agreement was made that if the Soviets disassembled the missile, the United States would not go into Cuba again. The agreement did happen. For me, this is ranked 4/11. -
Yom Kippur War
October 6, 1973 - November 1973. Countries in this war were Egypt, Israel and Syria. Land expansion from Israel caused tension with Egypt and Syria. They attacked Israel on one of its religious holidays. Israel was victorious. For me, this is ranked 8/11. -
Soviet War in Afghanistan
December 24, 1979 - February 15, 1989. Members of this war included the Soviet Union and Afghanistan. War happened because the Soviets thought that the growing population of Muslims would affect communism. After battling for almost 10 years, the Muslims stood victorious. For me, this is ranked 10/11. -
Soviets Downing Korean Air Lines Flight 007
September 1, 1983. This event had the Soviet Union and Korea in it. The Korean plane was shot down because it went off course. Tension was already high for the Soviets, so when the Soviets saw the plane, they just attacked. It ended up landing in a body of water, causing the people inside to drown. For me, this is ranked 7/11. -
"Able Archer" Military Exercise
November 11, 1983. This involved NATO and the Soviet Union. The exercise was conducted by NATO to model a nuclear attack on the Soviets. It was so similar and real looking, it almost scared the Soviets into starting actual nuclear warfare. For me, this is ranked 11/11.
