WWII
Europe War: Began when Germany, under Chancellor Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany.
Pacific War: Began when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Ended when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed by US atomic bombs. -
General Assembly
Unknown specific date, but created in 1945. The general assembly is the representative organ of the UN. This was meant to make decisions for the UN and try to keep world peace. This also related to the Cold War because it has discussions on how to relieve tensions and stop a nuclear war. -
Yalta Conference
Lasted from Febuary 4-11 1945. The Yalta Conference was a meeting between British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt and U.S.S.R leader Joseph Stalin. It was a meeting to discuss Europe's post was reorganization. This later leads to tension in the Cold War because of the separation of Berlin and the tensions with the Soviet Union. -
United Nations
Promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was created following the Second World War to prevent another such conflict. -
Iron Curtain Speech
One of the most famous speeches of the cold war. The speech was by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. He condemned the Soviet Union policies in Europe and declared "From settin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, and Iron Curtain has descended across the continent". This is considered one of the opening valleys announcing the beginning of the cold war. -

Joseph McCarthy speech
Joseph McCarthy gave a speech warning of communism in the United States. He gave specific names of people working within the state department and stated their crimes. They lost their jobs even though there was no proof they did it. McCarthy's speech scared Americans into wanting to stop the spread of communism during the cold war. -
Korean War
began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea. As Kim Il-sung's North Korean army, armed with Soviet tanks, quickly overran South Korea, the United States came to South Korea's aid. -

Bay of Pigs Invasion
April 17-19 1961. 1400 exiles launched what became a botched invasion at the Bay of Pigs in Southern Cuba. The invasion was meant to start a revolution again Castro to try and get him out of power. This relates to the cold war because the Russian supported Cuba and Castro. -

Cuban Missile Crisis
Lasted from October 14-28 1962. During the the Cuban Missile Crisis the U.S. and the U.S.S.R stood in a tense political and military standoff because of the threat of Nuclear misses in Cuba. The U.S.S.R agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba if the U.S. removed their misses from Turkey. This was a very tense moment in during the cold war. -
U.S. sends troops to Vietnam
In 1965 Lyndon B. Johnson began sending U.S. troops to Vietnam to help defend South Vietnam. At first the troops only played a defensive role but that soon changed. North Vietnam was communist backed and South Vietnam was Democracy backed. Neither side won and the U.S. pulled out in 1975 after 58,307 U.S. soldiers were killed. -

The Kent State shootings happened when the national guard opened fire on a large group of protester at Kent State campus in ohio killing 4 people. The students were protesting the Cambodian Campaign. The Soviet Union began trying to build its influence in Afghanistan to counter the American alliance with Pakistan beginning in 1954. Soviet support for Afghan communists eventually led to the war in Afghanistan. -
