    This war started out as a disagreement between France and Viet Minh (an organization created by Communist leader Ho Chi Minh). Originally, France had taken control of Vietnam during the late 1800s, however France lost control of Vietnam due to the invasion of Nazi Germany during WWII and Japan then took over it.     Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union. It was the first ever satellite sent into space. This made Americans nervous at the time for they worried the USSR would use it in a tactful manner.
  • U-2 Spy Plane shot down by Soviet Union

    U-2 Spy Planes were spy aircrafts sent by the United States into the Soviet Union. When the U-2 Spy Plane was shot down the United States claimed it was a weather plane that had just flown off course, but the soviets quickly disproved that with the photography taken. This raised tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States.
    Effect: Francis Gary Powers (Person flying the plane) was taken prisoner for a few years.

    Fidel Castro came into power in 1959 by overthrowing President Fulgencio Batista.     Description: Also known as the October crisis, was a 13-day confrontation. Soviet Union had fired missiles off in Cuba. This had made the United States uncomfortable considering how close it was to the country. One of the closest times when both came close to nuclear conflict.

    Over the past few years bomb and missile creation had become very constant, especially between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both signed a treaty stating that they would limit the number of nuclear missiles in their arsenals. First time in the Cold War that the Unites States and the Soviet Union had agreed on something.
