Cold War (Causes&Effects) Timeline

  • House of Un-American Activities Committee

    House of Un-American Activities Committee was formed because of the Second Red-Scare. Americans believed their was communist in America. It caused more tension.
  • GI Bill

    G.I. Bill was to help Military and Veterans with education, housing, etc. It had nothing to do with the cold war. Did not cause any kind of tension with the Soviet Union
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine was put in place to aid Europe countries effected by communism and WWII. U.S provided aid in military and money. It really did not cause a lot of tension. Its connected to the Cold War since we were helping nations against Communism.
  • National Security Act

    Department of Defense was formed. The C.I.A was formed. CIA is a thing where we train people to be spies and send them to other nations to inform of us what is going on in their nation. It is connected to Cold War because Department of Defense is who plans how U.S defends the U.S. Really don't cause tension.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan was to aid money to rebuild Europe from damages of WWII. Its connected to Cold War because we were aiding Europe.
  • Berlin Airlift (June 24, 1948 – May 12, 1949)

    Berlin Airlift caused tension between U.S and the Soviet Union because the Soviet Union cut off land ways for Berlin to get supplies. The U.S and other nations had to airmail supplies to Berlin. It's connected to the Cold War because it's between the Soviet Union and U.S
  • NATO

    NATO is North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is nations against Communism. It caused tension as nations were choosing sides just like if a war was to occur.
  • Brinkmanship – 1953

    United States and Soviet Union was both forming new powerful very dangerous weapons. Bomb shelters were becoming a thing in every house. People were living in constant fear of being bomb. It caused major tension between the two nations.
  • Korean War (June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953)

    Korean War was because North Korea invaded South in hopes of overthrowing their government to have it become communist. It lasted three years. Really didn't cause tension between the U.S and Soviet Union but it was a push to stop Communism.
  • Warsaw Pact

    This was a pact between Eastern Europe to defend communist nations. Most of Eastern Europe was communist. This caused tension as they were banding together in case war happened.
  • Eisenhower Doctrine

    This was put in place to aid military support after Hungary tried to escape Soviet Union power and failed. We promised if nations need support to escape communism we will aid them.
  • Interstate Highway System- June 29, 1956

    Eisenhower put this in act as he believed that incase something was to occur we need to get one side of the nation quick so highways were built. This really didn't effect the Cold War.
  • Sputnik - October 4, 1957

    Sputnik caused tension between Soviet Union and U.S because USSR launched a satellite in space. Space was an unexplored place until now. U.S didn't know how to react. They were scared it could harm them
  • U-2 Incident

    An American spy plane was caught flying over Soviet Union and was shot down. U.S played clueless as it wasn't them. This is linked to the Cold War because the U.S was spying on the Soviet Union. This increased tension.
  • Bay of Pigs (April 17, 1961 – April 19, 1961)

    This was a failed attempt of Cuban exiles to overthrow the government. U.S trained and aid the Cuban exiles to hope/help them to over throw the government. This increased tension a little bit.
  • Berlin Wall- November 9, 1961

    Berlin Wall was put up over night. Soviet Union put it up to stop people from East Germany fleeing to West Germany. It was a sign of communism. Increased tension.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis (October 14, 1962 – October 28, 1962)

    Cuban Missile Crisis caused very high tension. It almost brought war upon us. Soviet Union planted missiles in Cuba. If launched they would've caused major damage to the US
  • Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

    This was just to say nothing nuclear would be test above ground. Really didn't do much with the Cold War. It possible calmed some fears down but it didn't say they had to fully stop nuclear testing.
