The Cold war got its name because there was no actual combat fighting. It was basically a disagreement between United States and the Soviet Union about Communism. The U.S did not want Communism to spread and the Soviet Union did. -

Senator Joseph McCarthy begins accusing celebrities of being Communist for no reason. -
Beginning of the Korean War
The U.S gets involved after North Korea invades South Korea in order to stop the spread of Communism -

The Soviet Union succesfully manufactures and tests their first atomic bomb. The U.S named it Joe 1 -
Vietnam War starts
Communist North Vietnam tries to take over South Vietnam who is not Communist. -
Julius and Ethel Rosenburg executed
They are accused of being Russian spies and informing Soviet Union of the United State's atomic bomb. -
End of the Korean War
North Korea and South Korea agree to stop fighting but they still remain divided. North Korea is also still Communist -
Nikita Kruschev becomes the leader of the Soviet Union
Joseph Stalin dies and Kruschev takes over. Three months later Kruschev's rival is executed. -
Cuban Revolution
Fidel Castro becomes President of Cuba after the revolution and overthrow of Fulgencio Batista. Castro allies with the Soviet Union. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The U.S tries to invade Cuba to stop the spread of Communism. The U.S hoped that the Cuban people and parts of the Cubam military would join them in overthrowing Castro. This mission is a complete failure because Castro knew when to expect them and the soggy conditions on the ground force were poor. -
The "Iron Curtain"
The Soviet Union half of Germany builds the Berlin wall to separate the cty of Berlin. The people on The East side are not allowed to cross to the West side of the wall -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The U.S finds that the Soviet Union has Nuclear missiles in Cuba. The U.S demands that the missiles are removed. 13 days later Kruschev agrees after negotiations take place. -
U.S gets involved in the Vietnam War
President Lyndon Johnson reports that U.S ships were fired upon in Vietnam at the Gulf of Tonkin. Congress finally gives the U.S permission to get involved in the Vietnam War -
North Vietnam victory
North Vietnam takes over Saigon (South Vietnam's capital). The country becomes united as a Communist nation. -
Mikhail Gorbachev becomes President of S.U
Gorbachev becomes the president of the Soviet Union. He wants peace so he begins to sign treaties and policies that help end the cold war between the Soviet Union and the U.S.
