Malcolm X was shot to death.
Malcolm X was shot to death on February 21, 1965. At the time he was shot Malcolm was 39 years old. He was shot as he was starting to address a rally in New York City. After his death three baclk muslims were convicted of his murder. -
India suffers the worst famine in 20 years.
During 1966 India suffered the worst famine they had in 20 years. Lyndon Johnson asked for $1 million aid for the country. This famine hurt around 60 million people and there was acute food and water shortages. It was known as Bihar's 'near-miss'.(Which mean it was bad but it could have been worse.) The U.S. allocated 900,000 tons of grain to help fight the famine. -
The Soviet Union accuses the U.S. of causing an Israeli attack.
The Soviet Union accised the United States of encouraging an attack by Israel. They also accused us for the seizure of the Sinai, Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. We had accually tried to prevent it from happening. Since no one wanted to join, Israel fought alone. This war became known as the Six Day War. -
Communist China announces explosion of its first hydrogen bomb.
On June 17, 1967 Communist China announced the explosion of their first Hydrogen bomb. They had took five nuclear test to get it right. to get it correct and to take the tests it took them two years and eight months to get it successful. This explosion showed their nuclear growth. -
US and USSR propose a nuclear non proliferation treaty.
In August of 1967 the US and the USSR proposed a nuclear non proliferation treaty. The Eighteen-Nation Committee on Disarmament were the ones who also have to consider two separate but identical drafts of it. The treaty prevented a dangerous spread of nuclear weapons. It also stopped non-nuclear weapon countries from starting the production of nuclear weapons. -
American soldiers massacre 347 civilians at My Lai.
On March 16, 1968 American soldiers massacred 347 civilians at My Lai. This was led by Lt. William Calley and it was the 11th Brigade. This occurance was not known by Amercian civilians until the Autumn of 1969. There were several soldiers charged with murder because of it. -
Martin Luther King Jr. slain in Memphis.
On April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was shot in Memphis. He was killed at 6:01pm. Martin Luther was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel which he was staying. He was standing on the balcony of his motel room when he was shot. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed by a sniper. -
Soviet and Warsaw Pact allies invade Czechoslovakia.
Soviet and Warsaw Pact allies invaded Czechoslovakia to arrest the current leadership and restore a hard-line Communist to power. This was on the night of August 20 and onto the morning of August 21, 1968. The reason for this was "to save it from counterrevolution". On December 31, 1968 Czechoslovakia was made a federal state. -
Russian and Chinese troops clash along the Ussuri River.
On March 2, 1969 Russian and Chinese troops clashed along the Ussuri River. This clash was for the Damanski Island of Ussuri River. The Soviets suffered 34 people killed. The Chinese claimed its victory. There is evidence that shows the Soviets got reinforcements and reoccupied the land. The Soviet border patrol was also involved. -
Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi deposes King Idris of Libya.
During 1969 27 year old, Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi deposed of King Idris Of Libya. He then established a pro-Arabic, anti-Western, Islamic republic. He was also very anti-Israeli and he fostered anti-Western terroism. Qaddafi aligned himself with dictactors too.
