The Padlock Law was instroduced to prohibit anyone from "use [a house] or allow any person to make use of it to propagate communism or bolshevism by any means whatsoever." Pluse the printing, publishing or distributing of "any newspaper, periodical, pamphlet, circular, document or writing, propagating Communism or Bolshevism." -
Spies in Canada: The Gouzenko Affair
Igor Gouzenko was a Soviet trained in intelligence work. He was assigned to the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa in 1943. During the course of his work, he discovered that Soviet intelligence operated several spy networks in Canada and in other western countries. One of his biggest accomplishments of these spy networks was to steal the secrets of the atomic bomb. When he realized that he was going to be sent back to Russia, he offered the Canadian government secret documents exposing Soviet spies. -
Berlin Blockade
The Berlin Blockade was one of the first major international crises during the Cold War. The blockade blocked the Western Allies' railway, road and canal access to certain sectors of Berlin that were under Allie Control. -

The Suez Crisis was a diplomatic and military confrontation in late 1956 between Egypt on one side, and Britain, France, and Israel on the other side. The US, Soviet Union and United Nations were mojor roles in making Britain, France and Israel withdraw. -
Sputnik and Canada's Space Program
During 1957, the Soviets launched the first Sputnik satellite.The problem with this was the rocket used to launch the Sputnik into Earth's orbit could also be used to launch nuclear missiles. North America feared this because it could have been launched at them at any given time. North America responded by turning all long-range bomber aircrafts into long-range missle aircrafts. Russia responded the same way. -
Continental Alliances: NORAD and DEW
The North American Air Defense (NORAD) was and agreement signed in 1958. This agreement resulted in Canada and the US helping eachother to defend one another. the US installed the Distant Early Warning sytem (aslo known as DEW) which was a radar system that could premtively see missile attacks from Russia and warn Canda and the US before it was too late. -
Diefenbaker, Bomarc Missiles and Nuclear Warheads in Canada
Diefenbaker decided to arm Canadian forces with the Bomarc Missiles for defense. Nuclear warheads were not allowed into Canada. -
Avro Arrow and its Cancellation
The expensive Avro Arrow was a supersonic, interceptor, jet aricraft. Diefenbaker ordered it to be scrapped due to the cost. In its place, Diefenbaker ordered ready-made American Bomarc missiles for Canada``s defense. -

The Cuban Missile Crisis (also known as the October crisis in Cuba and the Caribbean crisis) was a 13-day confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the US on the Other. This crisis is generally regarded as the moment of the Cold War where it came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict. -

The Super Series was an eight game series of ice hockey between the Soviet Union and Canada. This series was created with the true intention of creating a best-on-best competition in the sport of ice hockey. In the end Canada was victorious with a memorable game winning goal by Paul Henderson. -

The Soviet Union`s history spans from 1982-1991. Due to the years of Soviet militar buildup at the expense of domestic development, economic growth stagnated. Failed attempts at reform, a standstill economy, and the success of the United States against the Soviet Union`s forces in the war of Afghanistan led to a mutual feeling of discontent.
