    Main security Agency for the Soviet Union form the end of WWII to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. "Secret Police"

  • Iron Curtain

    Idealogical border between Communist satellite states, the Soviet Union, and all other European nations.

  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan was active for four years from this point. Gave money to European countries not involved with Soviet Union.

  • Berlin Airlift

    Supplies are shipped into West Germany by planes to keep it from succumbing to the Soviet Union.

  • NATO formed

    North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The alternative to joining the Warsaw Pact.

  • People's Republic of China

    Communist Party led by Mao Zedong took control of China.

  • Korean War

    War between UN backed South Korean troops and Soviet backed North Korea to keep the North from "reuniting Korea."

  • Vlaidimir Putin

    Worked with KGB up through the fallout of the Soviet Union, which is when he became involved with politics. rime Minister of United Russia from 1999-2000, and President from 2000-2008. He been elected the position of President again from 2008-2012.

  • Explosion of the First Hydrogen Bomb

    "Ivy Mike" the first hydrogen bomb was detonated by the United States.

  • Geneva Accords

    Decision by several countries that Vietnam and Indochina must remain their own state. Northern Vietnam would be controlled by France. France screwed up yet again and Northern Vietnam became a Soviet territory.

  • Suez Canal Crisis

    Access to Suez canal for NATO countries is endangered by Israeli forces closing in on it during their invasion of Egypt.

  • European Economic Community

    Collection of three European countries for their mutual tax benefits.

  • Sputnik 1 Launched

    Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviet Union into low earth orbit. Burned up in a couple days. Most importantly it started the space race. the competition between the Soviet Union and the United States for control of space.

  • Berlin Wall Erected

    The erection of the wall that seperated East Germany from West Germany by the Soviet Union

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    13 day Mexican Standoff between Soviet Union and United States involving nuclear missiles.

  • Tet Offensive

    Massive offensive launched by Viet Cong. Military failure for Communists. Surprised America that the Soviet forces could launch such a large offensive.

  • Ho Chi Minh

    Died. Leader of Communist Vietnam

  • Brezhnev Doctrine

    Used to justify the invasion of any Communist or non-communist country being converted to capitalism

  • Helsinki Accords

    another conference to try and improve relations with the Sovitet Union.

  • Iranian Hostage Crisis

    Followers of the old Shah in Iran stormed the US embassy because the new Shah who they hated was beiing housed in the US. Argo was a great movie.

  • Soviet War in Afghanistan

    Lasted from December 1979 to February 1989.

  • 1980 Moscow Olympics

    Nobody was excited for them. Several countries boycotted the Olympics this year due to political relations with the USSR.

  • Solidarity (Polish Tade Union)

    Polish trade union formed for the advancement of its members. Soviet Union tried to silence them with Martial Law. Eventually forced to compromise with the Trade Union.

  • Nikita Khrushchev

    Started destalinization in the Soviet Union. Was removed from office by his colleagues and replaced with somebody more harsh.

  • Los Angeles Summer Olympics

    Soviet Union boycotted these Olympics.

  • Perestroika and Glasnot

    Series of reforms in Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 aimed at drastically increasing production. Caused older military leadership in the USSR to attempt a coup on the President, Gorbachev at the time.

  • Chernobyl Disaster

    When a routine check of a fan causes a short circuiting of coolant systems to building four, the core has a meltdown and released a large cloud of nuclear fallout. Evacuated the nearby town of Pripyat.

  • Mikhail Gorbachev

    Last president of the Soviet Union. Looks like a pushover

  • Tiananmen Square Protests

    Governmentally suppressed protests by Chinese citizens.

  • Berlin Wall begun too be torn down

    The West Germanic Government declares that people from East/West Germany had the freedom to visit each other. From there on out the wall was torn down within the next year.

  • Dissolution of Soviet Union

    The Soviet Union is officially dissolved.
