    Collection of three European countries for their mutual tax benefits.
  • Sputnik 1 Launched

    Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviet Union into low earth orbit. Burned up in a couple days. Most importantly it started the space race. the competition between the Soviet Union and the United States for control of space.

    13 day Mexican Standoff between Soviet Union and United States involving nuclear missiles.

    Massive offensive launched by Viet Cong. Military failure for Communists. Surprised America that the Soviet forces could launch such a large offensive.

    Used to justify the invasion of any Communist or non-communist country being converted to capitalism

    another conference to try and improve relations with the Sovitet Union.
  • Iranian Hostage Crisis

    Followers of the old Shah in Iran stormed the US embassy because the new Shah who they hated was beiing housed in the US. Argo was a great movie.

    Lasted from December 1979 to February 1989.

    Polish trade union formed for the advancement of its members. Soviet Union tried to silence them with Martial Law. Eventually forced to compromise with the Trade Union.

    Started destalinization in the Soviet Union. Was removed from office by his colleagues and replaced with somebody more harsh.
  • Los Angeles Summer Olympics

    Soviet Union boycotted these Olympics.
  • Perestroika and Glasnot

    Series of reforms in Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 aimed at drastically increasing production. Caused older military leadership in the USSR to attempt a coup on the President, Gorbachev at the time.
