Formation of the Eastern Bloc
The Eastern bloc was a coalition of all of the world's communist countries. It was made in order to protect the communist ideals and further the military success of the communist alliance. It was started near the end of World War 2. -
Postwar occupation and division of Germany
After the end of World War 2 the allies made a plan to occupy and get Germany back on it's feet after it's loss. Germany was divided into four occupation zones, one going to each of the major allied powers, America, Britain, France, and Russia. These sectors ended up creating a split Germany, one side being democratic and one side being communist. -
Greek Civil War
A war taking place just after World War 2, it involved a Communist uprising against the government of Greece. Greece being made into a people's republic, governed by a communist government. After backing from the United Kingdom and United States, Greece was able to be rid of Communism. -
Enactment of Marshall Plan
The Marshall plan was a plan set in place in order to help rebuild Western Europe after the end of World War 2. It targeted 17 countries in particular. The goal was made to create a stable environment for democracy to thrive. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
In Berlin, the allies held one side, while the communist held the other. Because he took this as a direct threat, Stalin created a blockade in order to try to get the democratic countries to withdraw from Berlin. The Americans responded by using air transport to deliver supplies. The main goal being on the communist side, to eliminate the democratic region of Berlin, and on the democratic side, to hold out against the blockade. -
Chinese Communist Revolution
After facing problems due to imperialism from the Western world, along with the Japanese having tormented them throughout World War 2. The Chinese Communist Party was formed in order to protect China against foreign foe's. The goal being to rebuild and protect China. -
Korean war
A conflict between North and South Korea, the North side backed by China and the Soviet union. And the South side backed by the United States and the United Nations. This war never had an official ending, only having ended in armistice. -
Cuban Revolution
After years of unrest, a young Fidel Castro led a raid against the Monaca army barracks. This rad fails, 3 years later however Castro and his group of revolutionaries fled the mainland, setting up a base and eventually taking control of Cuba. -
Vietnam war
A war between North Vietnam, supported by the Soviets and china, alongside the Viet Cong. Fighting against South Vietnam, which was backed by the United states. This was to this day the most memorable United States Military failure . After it ended, North Vietnam reunified Vietnam into one communist nation. -
Hungarian Uprising
The uprising was caused by the unrest within the Soviet-dominated country and the strict policies made by the government. It began with protests and demands for reforms. And ended with militias fighting the state protection authority until the Soviet's sent tanks and troops, killing thousands and stomping the uprising. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
A failed Military landing operation on the south west of Cuba, it involved 1,500 Cuban reformers opposed to Fidel Castro. The reformers were backed by the United States government and had the goal to overthrow the Cuban government. This resulted in a Cuban and Soviet Victory. -
Building the Berlin Wall
A wall created as many say overnight. The berlin wall was a concrete wall created to divide East and West Berlin. The east side being communist and the west side being capitalist. -
Cuban Missile crisis
A crisis that began because the Soviet ruler decided to install missile silos in Cuba. The United States saw this, and tensions grew. It forced President John F. Kennedy to impose a blockade on Cuba to prevent any further weapons reaching Cuba. This ended in an agreement for the Soviets to pull the missiles out of Cuba. -
Prague Spring
A period of political infighting in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. It began when the government tried to pass reforms granting additional rights to the citizens. But the Soviet union did not agree with these reforms and invaded in order to overturn the decision. -
Overthrow of the Allende Government in Chile
The Chile government was overthrown in a military coup and led to consequences for the entire region. It began because of political unrest within the country and economic challenges. It resulted in Allende's death and a new government taking control. -
Soviet Union war against Afghanistan
A war between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan in order to protect the Communist government. It was a costly and controversial war for the Soviets. And ultimately ended in Soviet defeat and withdrawal. -
Tiananmen Square Massacre
A massacre of Chinese student protesters that followed multiple unsuccessful attempts to end it peacefully. The massacre saw thousands of deaths and furthered the rule of the Communist Chinese government. The event is a very controversial topic of Chinese history. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
The fall of the berlin wall was symbolic of the Soviet Union's downfall. The wall fell as both east and west Berlin joined forces to take it down. Allowing the end of the split city and the end of Communist Germany in general. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
The fall of the Soviet Union came after many years of failed economical planning and costly wars. It allowed for all of the independent states the Soviet's once controlled to become their own countries. And marked the end of the Cold war. -
9/11 Attacks
A series of terrorist attacks targeting the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. This attack marked the beginning of the War on Terror. And caused the United States to begin the war against the Taliban.
