Potsdam Conference
The Conference was from July 18 1945 to August 2 1945. In the conference they talked about the administration of the defeated Germany and the continuing military campaign against japan. This was to help people prepare for the reconstruction of Europe. This allowed people to get help and be ready for what was to come. -
Vietnam war
In 1954 to ,1975 the north vietnam wanted to reunite the country under communism. The people from the united states, the soviet union,and several other countries also participated. At the end of the war after 1.3 mil Vietnam soldiers and 58,000 u.s. Troops died the north won. -
Nato/Warsaw Pact
On May 14, 1955 a treaty called the Warsaw pact was signed. The treaty was signed for friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance. The treaty was renewed several times over the years. Once in 1975, once in 1985 and it was dissolved in 1991. The Soviet union wanted to
establish a strong defense alliance and to strengthen the hold of the soviet union over its Eastern European satellites etc. -
Korean War
On june 1950 to july 1953 what happened is this is the first major battle over communism. After japan lost the war, the soviet union took over the north , while the united states took over in the south.The 38th parallel of latitude (38 degrees north) was the dividing line between the two parts, However the soviet refused to allow the people in there section to vote on a new gov.In 1948 the country was officially divided into north and south korea. -
Sputnik
On October 4,1957 the soviet union launched sputnik what happened was Russians successfully launch its satellite into space. The soviets launched sputnik to demonstrate their technological power in the united states. Sputnik started an arms race between Russia and america. -
Cuban revolution & missile crisis
In october of 1962 president JFK notified americans about the presence of of missiles. In 1959 Fidel Castro aligned himself with the soviet union. Then later America’s spy plane made a pass over Russia´s sss-4 and all of this lead to a very intense standoff between the countries and the standoff lasted for 13 days. To end the standoff, Soviet leaders decided to dismantle their missiles in Cuba if the Americans removed their missile installations in Turkey. -
Suez Crisis
On July 26 1956 Egyptian pres. Nationalized the Suez canal then later Israel brigades invaded Egypt. UN later evacuated french troops. Israel then withdrew. The american and British decided not to finance Egypt’s construction like they said they would which led to a tense 13 day standoff between countries. -
Glasnost/Perestrokia
In the late 1980s Gorbachev believed that opening up of the political system was a good idea. The Russian word ¨openness”refers to the soviet policy of open discussion. This gave the media greater freedom to publish things publicly.
