Truman Doctrine
This was a Document/ Policy by President Truman, Providing economic and military aid to free nations threatened by internal and external opponents. It was mainly used to help support countries or nations facing threats from the Soviet Union. -
Start of the Cold War
The Cold War started due to all the tension, propaganda, political warfare and other conflicts between the U.S & Soviet Union. It was a state of military tension after World War 2. This event was quite major it saved the lives of people trapped in Communist country's, and it help srop the expansion of communism. -
Marshall Plan
This was an outreach from the Americans, in which they aided Western Europe with over $12 billion to help rebuild Western Europe's economy after the end of World War ll. -
Berlin Blockade
The Berlin blockade was a major event that took place in the Cold war. It was a block by the Soviet Union in order to block the western allies from roadways, canal access, and railroads from places in Berlin. The soviet union denied them all access to food and supplies, leaving them there to starve and die off. -
Berlin Airlift
This was an action by the U.S. When Berlin was a soviet controlled nation, they were being starved and not let out of the country. So the U.S came into action and flew over dropping supplies and food to help rebuild and help the people of Berlin. This action was in response to the Berlin Blockade. This saved the lives of many and was a huge action on the United states part. -
(NATO) North Atlantic Treaty Organization
NATO was a grouped of Western European nations joined by the United States and Canada to form a defensive military alliance. It was created in response to the actions of the Soviet Union and to provide security against the Soviet Union. This was the first Peacetime military alliance. -
Start of the Korean war
The Korean war began when North Korea invaded South Korea. The United States was there to aid South Korea, while North Korea had the Soviet Union as its aid. This left a major impact on Korea, it resulted in the division of Korea into North Korea and South Korea. It separated many families. -
The Rosenberg Trial
This trial took place in the year of 1951. It was the trial of couple, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, who were accused of selling nuclear secrets with the Russians. The only thing is they couldn't technically be charged with treason,because at the time the United States were not at war with the Soviet Union. -
Eisenhower Elected President
In the year of 1952 Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, was elected President of the United States. He ran against Democrat Adlai E. Stevenson, whom he defeated by a tremendous amount of votes. Eisenhower didn't leave much physical impact, because his goal was to remain peaceful and avoid war at all costs. He initially achieved it, but in the end it was one of the factors that led up to the Cold War. -
The Death of Stalin
March 5, 1953 Joseph Stalin the leader of the Soviet Union, died of a massive heart attack. This day was relief to many, he had many rivals. He caused much pain. Stalin is remembered as a mass murderer who witnessed millions of his people die. -
Rosenberg Execution
After the trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, whom were a married couple convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage in 1951, were executed. They tried to prove their innocence, but it was't believed by the judges. They were charged with a death sentence. So in the year of 1953, both were executed by the electric chair. This case was one of the most controversial cases of the Cold War. -
Geneva Conference
The Geneva Conference was a meeting that took place in Geneva, Switzerland. Its purpose was to resolve any problems in Asia. The United States played a role by trying to figure out an agreement to save Vietnam from the communists. Overall this conference was a turning point in the United State's involvement with Vietnam overall. -
McCarthy Dies
Joseph McCarthy passed away at the age of 48 due to his extreme alcoholism. He was known as one the most famous and feared "Red- Hunter." He spent most of his career trying to solve the problem of all the communists in the united states, by figuring out how many their were and who they were. Although he was very good at what he did he ruined many American peoples lives who were falsely accused of being a communist. Most of america hated him. -
NASA Created
NASA also known as National Aeronautics and Space Administration was created in 1958 by Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is an agency responsible for coordinating Americas actions in space. It also gives vital information about the solar system and universe. NASA was created in response to the Soviet Union's launch of it's first satellite. NASA was a major creation that still helps to this day. -
U-2 Incident
During the Cold war in 1960, when a United states U-2 spy plane airplane was flying over head in Soviet airspace, it was shot down. Once the pilot was captured president Eisenhower admitted that the US had been flying spy missions over the USSR for years. He was soon sentenced to 10 years in prison. -
Kennedy Elected
On November 8,1960, John F. Kennedy defeated Vice President Richard M. Nixon. He became President of the United States, the first youngest president in fact. There were many first's with this election, for example the televised debates. This was a very huge and important moment in history. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was a failed invasion of Cuba by the CIA. They attempted to push Castro from his power, but when they arrived on the island the plan backfired. They were outnumbered by Castro's troops, they surrendered after less than 24 hours of fighting. -
Berlin Wall
On August 13,1961, The Communist government of the German democratic republic began to build a concrete and barbed wire wall. It was build in response to the conflicts between Eastern and Western Berlin. The purpose of the wall was to keep western fascists from entering eastern Germany. To this day the Berlin still stands as one of the most powerful symbols of the Cold War -
Cuban Missile Crisis
During the Cuban missile Crisis the U.S and the Soviet Union engaged in a 13 day political, and military standoff over the instillation of nuclear armed missiles in Cuba, close to the U.S. Kennedy even threatened to use military force. People were scared of a nuclear war. But it was avoided when the U.S promised not to invade Cuba if they removed their missiles. This saved the United States from an even bigger crisis. It was one of the most important factors of the Cold War. -
Kennedy assassinated
In Dallas Texas on November 22, 1963 President John F. Kennedy, was shot and killed while riding in his motorcade. It was completely out of nowhere and very sudden. This event caused many people pain and upset many. After this event no one trusted the government. To this day this tragic event will forever be remembered.
