    The Yalta conference was a meeting in which the leaders of the U.S., Great Britain, and Soviet Union agreed on a set of measures to be implemented after the defeat of Germany. They all agreed on the unconditional surrender of Germany and began to discuss what will happen to the land/ government after the war. Stalin agreed to grant free elections in Eastern Europe and to enter the war against Japan. This conference helped each nation work out what land they would be getting after the war.

    The United Nations was an international peacekeeping organization to which most nations in the world belong, founded in 1945 to promote world peace, security, and economic development. This was created after World War II to try and prevent other wars from happening and promote love and peace to the world. The United Nations currently has 193 nations that belong to it and this is very important when dealing with wars because all of these nations do not want another world war.

    President Truman signed Economic Recovery Act
    The Economic recovery act was called the Marshall plan and was proposed by Secretary of State George Marshall under which the U.S. supplied economic aid to European nations to help them rebuild after WWII. This was very important because it helped rebuild Europe and get them to trade more with the U.S. which led the USAs economy to boom. The Soviets saw the plan as an attempt to interfere with another countries internal affairs and refused to let Poland and Czechoslovakia to participate.

    Start of Berlin Airlift
    A 327-day operation in which U.S. and British planes flew food and supplies into West Berlin after the Soviets blockaded the city. Many people wanted out of East Berlin because it was controlled by the Soviets. They were fleeing by the thousands to West Berlin and the Soviets needed to do something to stop everyone from leaving. They built a wall so the allies stuffed planes with food, medical supplies, and sometimes even gifts and dropped them in Soviet Berlin. This brought hope to East Berlin.

    McCarthyism is the attacks , often unsubstantiated, by Senator Joseph McCarthy and others on people suspected of being communists in the early 1950s. This was a big problem in the United States because we started to blame everyone as being communists and it ruined a lot of peoples familys/friends/relationships because no one was trusted. There was no real way to tell if someone was a communist and this was the worst part about it.
  • Start of Korean War

    A conflict between North Korea and South Korea, in which the United States, along with other UN countries, fought on the side of South Koreans and China fought on the side of North Koreans. When North Korea attacked, south Korea fought back and under General MacArthur took over North Korea. Communist China got involved and pushed troops back to South Korea. The US thought that this was the first step in the communist campaign to take over the world.

    President Truman fires General MacAuthur
    General MacAuthur was very aggressive in dealing with war and wanted to use the atomic bombs during the Korean war as well as attack China during the war. President Truman on the other hand wanted to keep this war limited and not big. MacAuthur kept persisting and eventually went public with his desires. Truman fired MacAuthur once he went public. Americans were angry with Truman's decision but Truman was persistent on keeping this war small.
  • Eisenhower elected as president

    Eisenhower was a five star general in world war II and was the commander of NATO in Europe. He always expressed that he did not have much interest in Politics. President Eisenhower ran in the race as a republican and won in a landslide.
  • Stalin died

    Stalin died
    Joseph Stalin died in march of 1953 from a stroke. Stalin was a very harsh communist leader and believed it was his way or no way. When he died, it was a turning point for the Soviet Union as well as the United States and Europe. When the new leader(s) came in, they were still communists but not as harsh as Stalin. This led to more negotiations happening between the Soviets and Allies and eventually led to the end of the cold war.

    After three years of bloody war between North and South Korea, the finally stopped fighting and worked out a deal. The armistice, signed on July 27, established a committee of representatives from neutral countries to decide the fate of the thousands of prisoners of war on both sides. Millions died during the war and about 50,000 American lives were lost during those 3 years. By the war ending, the U.S. could focus more of its resources to fighting the Soviets.

    The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance formed in 1955 by the Soviet Union and its eastern European satellites. This pact was in response to the United States and other Western nations forming NATO. The Soviets were threatened by the West forming a military alliance so they formed their own with eastern countries.
  • Hungarian revolution

    The Hungarian people were tired of the communist ruled government and started an uprising to overthrow the government. It started out as a student protest but soon grew very large. This was a big deal because it was the first real attack on the USSR but its people. During the revolution, the Soviet police shot at crowds and killed and injured protesters. The Soviets cam out on top and the revolution ended after weeks of fighting.
  • Sputnik launched

    The sputnik was the first successful satellite launched into space. This started the space race between the United States and and the Soviet Union. The United States soon after launched their own satellite into space. By the Soviets launch the sputnik, they created a competition of who can put the most things in space and it actually made peoples lives easier by providing weather patterns and control air traffic.
  • NASA was created

    NASA was created
    NASA stand for national aeronautics and space administration. By congress passing legislation allowing for NASA to become a reality, it showed the world and american people that the United States was in it to win the space race against the Soviet Union. NASA was highly successful and is still around today.
  • U-2 plane shot down

    U-2 plane shot down
    The US was secretly flying over USSR land to take pictures of the land to see where the bombs and other military things were located. When the US and USSR were about to work out a deal, the last U-2 plane was caught and shot down by the Soviets. This made them not trust the US anymore and tore up any chance there was going to be for peace. The USSR took the pilot of the spy plane as a prisoner and he was sentenced to 10 years but was released when the US traded a soviet spy prisoner with him.

    John F Kennedy was a firm believer in being tough against the communists. He believed that the United States was falling behind the communists during the cold war. During his presidency, Kennedy was faced with the cuban missile crisis and many other had tasks that would be hard for anyone to take care of. I personally believe he made some good decisions but there are always bad decisions that he made. JFK was an important figure during the cold war era. He was assassinated in 1963.

    Soviet Union sends first person into space
    Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. He went on a 108 minute orbit and it marked another important point of the space race between the Soviets and the US. Again though, the Soviets got to this accomplishment first. Less than a month after Gagarin went up into space, the United States sent the first American into space. The US and the USSR were in a fierce competition that led to them working together eventually in 1975. Many good things did come out if the Space race battle

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was an attempted but failed invasion of Cuba. The CIA trained 1400 Cubans that fled Cuba to invade cuba and try to overturn the government. The invasion was failed because the CIA lied and said they bombed Cubas air weapons but they did not. The Cuban army greatly outnumbered the United States army and they demolished them. This was an embarrassment to the the United States and the the CIA.

    The Soviet Union put missile's on Cuba to try and scare the United States with weapons that could be launched at any time and hit any US city it targeted. The US knew they had to do something so they created a blockade around cuba so that no new missiles or weapons could reach cuba. This worked for a period of time and the Soviets and the US eventually worked out a deal that if the US did not invade cuba and took their missiles out of turkey then The USSR would take the missiles out of cuba.

    The hotline between the US and the USSR was created so that communications between the two countries was more clear and they could get in contact with each other faster. This helped lesson the threat of accidental nuclear war and was one step closer to the end of the cold war. After the Cuban Missile crisis and almost going to nuclear war there, the US and the USSR both knew that they could not go to nuclear war without destroying heir own nation.
