Veitnam War
The Vietnam War started when Vietnam declared its independence from foreign rule. In this war the U.S supported the French, because they wanted to stop the spread of communism. In 1954 the French surrendered and the country was divided at the 17th parallel. -
China Becomes Communist
China became a communist nation in October 1949. After World War Two, a Civil War in China was started between the Chinese Communist Party and The Nationalists. The communists won and China’s leader became Mao Zedong. -
Korean War
The Korean War was started when North Korea invaded South Korea. So, they supported the Nationalists, who were fighting the communists. The result of the war was that Korea was divided into two nations at the 38th parallel; communist in the North, and Republic in the south. -
Soveit Launch Sputnik
The first satellite named Sputnik, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. The satellite was about the size of a basketball and could travel around the world in 98 minutes. This worried the American because the Soviet Union's technology was becoming very advanced. The U.S. was concerned that the Soviet Union would develop high tec weapons and become more powerful. -
Fidel Castro comes to Power
On February 16 1959 Fidel Castro became the leader of Cuba. He was overthrew the dictator Fulgencio Batista. He had led a revolution in Cuba. This made Americans nervous because of his political views and his connections with the Soviet Union. -
Bay Of Pigs Invasion
Bay of Pigs was and unsuccessful invasion of Cuba from the US. The goal was to overthrow the leader, Fidel Castro. The troops were people in America who had fled Cuba when Castro took power. The troops were very outnumbered and unprepared, and so they had to surrender. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis began when America discovered that there was a nuclear missile base being built in Cuba. The missiles were aimed at the United States. President Kennedy did not want to engage in any kind of violence because he didn’t want to start a war. In the end, no one necessarily won the Cuban missile crisis because no one acted in violence of any kind. -
US Sends Man to the Moon
On July 20th 1969 the Apollo 11 was the first moon landing with Astronauts. The three astronauts were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. This relates to the Cold War because the United States and the Soviet Union were both trying to have the most advanced tecnologies.
