    The Truman Doctrine
    In the early 1947 Soviet-backed Communist were threatening the governments of Greece and Turkey. President Truman used this opportunity to announce what became known as the Truman Doctrine, it was a pledge to provide economic and military aid to oppose the spread of communism.

    Berlin Airlift
    The Soviets had blocked off all land, rail, and water routes into West Berlin, because of that 2 million residents were not able to import food, coal, and other vital supplies. Then they organized the Berlin sirlift, a massive effort to supply the West Berlin by air.

    The United States , Canada, and most Western European countries joined together in a military alliance, they're alliance was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO. Then the Soviet Union and the Communist nations of Eastern Europe formed their own alliance called Warsaw Pact.

    This was a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of the Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, After a two week standoff, Soviet leaders removed the missiles when the United States agreed to remove theirs in Turkey and promised not to attack Cuba.
