    Russian Communist Revolution
    The rise of the Soviet Union, the start of communism in Russia.
    Connection to the Cold War: The state of communism began during this revolution, and that was one of the main causes of the Cold War.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The treaty that ended WWI between Germany and the Allied Powers, it basically put all of the blame on Germany for the war and made them pay for the whole war; this ended up causing even more problems when Germany went into an economic depression that caused the rise of Hitler, a fascist leader.
    Connection to the Cold War: The TOV caused WWII, and WWII lead into the COld War as the U.S. and the Soviet Union started to face disagreements.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations
    International organization developed after WWI created to maintain peace.
    Connection to the Cold War: The League of Nations did not work out, and also increased tensions between countries during disputes and disagreements.
  • Nuclear Deterrent

    Nuclear Deterrent
    A theory that nuclear weapons are created to prevent other states from attacking with their nuclear weapons. (mutual assured destruction).
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. and the Soviet Union were in this situation, they both had nuclear weapons and were very threatening to each other because of the fact that they each kept producing more and more nuclear weapons.
  • Nuremberg Trials

    Nuremberg Trials
    A site in Germany used for judges (allied powers) to rule over the hearings of 22 major Nazi criminals.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Nazi’s disruption and the terrorizing of the Jewish people during WWII had a major effect on why the U.S. and the Soviet Union became so tense with each other.
  • United Nations

    United Nations
    An organization formed to achieve peace and security. The cause of this was the second world war.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. and the Soviet Union were both in the United Nations, however they both disagreed and therefore caused more tensions and problems.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    World war 2 meeting from the main govt officials of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union. There they discussed Germany and Europe's post war reorganization.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S (go easy on Germany) and The Soviet Union (go harsh on Germany) had different ideas and ways in which they wanted to punish Germany, this being one of the first disagreements that the U.S. and the Soviet Union faced.
  • Iron Curtain Speech

    Iron Curtain Speech
    Winston Churchill visited Westminster College explaining the tensions between countries which was a major cause of the Cold War.
    Connection to the Cold War: Winston Churchill was from Britain, who was an ally of the U.S., so he knew of the tensions and reasons that the Cold War occured and he explained them.
  • Baruch Plan

    Baruch Plan
    A proposal from the US govt. by Bernard Baruch. His goal was to get the united nations agency to stop nuclear power and stop the development of those weapons.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. and the Soviet Union were both very involved with nuclear weapons during the Cold War, so with the U.S. having someone propose a plan to limit nuclear weapons, that could decrease tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet UNnon, they wouldn’t seem so threatening to each other.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was proposed by Harry Truman; and it stated that the U.S. would go to whatever lengths necessary in order to stop the spread of communism, which the Soviet Union was intending to do.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union was a communist state and they were trying to spread communism, however the U.S. would not support that and therefore fight back against the Soviet Union.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Military operation that brought food and goods into West Berlin, after the government of East Germany cut off the supply routes.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. supported West Berlin while the Soviet Union supported East Berlin, so this must’ve angered the Soviets increasing tension.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    American initiative to aid Western Europe, giving over 13 billion dollars in financial support.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union would not let Eastern Europe (communistic states) participate, so the U.S. and Western Europe prospered as their enemies fell behind; this caused even more tension.
  • NATO creation

    NATO creation
    Created by several western european nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. formed a big pact with many allies, and this caused the Soviet Union to do the same thing right back, the allies made tensions even stronger.
  • Chinese Communist Revolution

    Chinese Communist Revolution
    Mao Zedong and other communist leaders met for a series of talks on the new postwar government, it was also the second part of the Chinese Civil War.
    Connection to the Cold War: China was under a communist state and therefore favored Russia, causing their close allie partnership with the U.S. to weaken.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    North Korea, who was backed by the Soviet Union and China invaded South Korea, who was backed by The United States. This war was in order to prevent the spread of communism.

    Connection to the Cold War: Since South Korea was backed by the U.S. and North Korea was backed by the Soviet Union and China, it seems obvious that that created even more disagreement and tension in the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet union.
  • Joseph McCarthy speech

    Joseph McCarthy speech
    He gave a Lincoln Day Speech to his republican women's club of wheeling about his thoughts and ideas on the spread and stopping of communism.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union was under communist rule while the U.S. tried to prevent communist rule, and Joseph McCarthy proposed his ideas in which he thought communism was coming into the U.S.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    A pact between the Soviet Union and its seven satellites; Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. This pact declared that if any one of the countries in the pact were to be attacked or invaded, the other countries would come to help them.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Warsaw Pact was formed in order to counteract NATO, formed permanent allies against the U.S. and Western Europe.
  • Sputnik Launched

    The Soviet Union launched the earth's first artificial satellite.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union and the U.S. were now engaged in a space race, which only strengthened tensions.
  • Fidel Castro Proclaims Communist Cuba

    Fidel Castro Proclaims Communist Cuba
    Fidel Castro takes over Cuba and declares it a communist nation.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union was also under a communist state, so it seems likely that The Soviet Union and Cuba were allies and took action together.
  • Building of Berlin Wall Begins

    The Berlin wall, which was used to separate West Berlin and East Berlin, was first set with barbed wire. Eventually, it was made of concrete with guard towers along it.
    Connection to the Cold War: East Berlin was under communist rule, which was supported by the Soviet Union, and the wall was built so that the people in East Berlin could not escape.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    Failed military invasion of Cuba. The goal was to throw over Fidel Castro by Cuban exiles.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union and Cuba were both communist states and therefore worked together, so when the U.S. invaded Cuba it made the Soviet Union anger and increased tensions.

    A wall that separated West Berlin from East Berlin. At the end of WWII, Berlin divided into 4 sectors.
    Connection to the Cold War: East Berlin was under communist rule as well as the Soviet Union was, the wall helped to prevent people from leaving East Germany.

    The US and Soviet Union promised eachother damage to the opposite end if nuclear attacks occured
    Connection to the Cold War: This was a major factor in the Cold War, the US and the Soviet Union were costantly threatening eachother with nuclear weapons which kept increasing tensions
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    13-day confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union concerning America's missile deployment in Italy and Turkey along with the Soviet Union’s missile deployment in Cuba.
    Connection to the Cold War: This was the closest the Cold War came to turning into a full blown nuclear war, the Soviet Union seemed to be threatening the U.S. way too much with the nuclear weapons so the U.S. stood their ground and fought back.
  • U.S. Sends Troops to Vietnam

    U.S. Sends Troops to Vietnam
    The U.S. sent troops into Vietnam in order to stop communisming from spreading and to try to restore order, this angered China and the Soviet Union.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. trying to stop communism from spreading would frusturate the Soviet Union and therefore increase tensions.

    International treaty to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and create a peaceful use of nuclear energy.
    Connection to the Cold War: Nuclear weapons played a huge factor in the Cold War and made tensions extremely strong with the nuclear arms race, so this agreement calmed down the tension while limiting the making and usage of nuclear weapons.
  • Apollo 11

    Spaceflight that landed the first two humans on the moon, from America.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. and the Soviet Union’s tensions grew even more throughout the space race, when both countries wanted to be more advanced when dealing with spacecraft.
  • Kent State Shooting

    Ohio national guardsman on the Kent State University campus shot and killed 4 students who were protesting the bombing of Cambodia by the U.S.
    Connection to the Cold War: The U.S. bombed Cambodia in order to try to cease the supply routes from North Vietnam to South Vietnam, because North Vietnam was a communist state and therefore supported by the Soviet Union while South Vietnam was supported by the U.S.
  • SALT I/II

    SALT I/II
    An agreement signed by the U.S. and USSR, intended to restrain the arms race with nuclear weapons.
    Connection to the Cold War: The arms race with nuclear weapons was one of the main reasons of the Cold War, so restraining the nuclear weapons could decrease tension and threatening during the war.
  • Fall of Saigon

    A capture of Saigon (capital of south Vietnam) by the people's army of Vietnam (north), marking the official end of the Vietnam war.
    Connection to the Cold War: North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union while South Vietnam was supported by the U.S., so this fall was sort of a loss to the U.S. as well.

    Connection to the Cold War: Preached about communism being bad, went against the Soviet union and spread the disadvantages to being under a communist state.

    Connection to the Cold War: Attempted to keep close ties with the US and Western Europe and to stay distant to the Soviet Union
  • Soviets Invade Afghanistan

    Soviets Invade Afghanistan
    Soviet union sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan and immediately got 100% control of large portions of the country.
    Connection to the cold war: The soviets are again attempting to spread communism, this time they went into Afghanistan to do so and succeeding in taking control.

    Connection to the Cold War: Thatcher was an allie with the U.S., and she aided the U.S. in bringing down the SOviet UNion and putting an end to the Cold War.

  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The spokesman for the East Berlin's communist party announced that his citizens were free to cross over the wall to the West.
    Connection to the Cold War: The Soviet Union was also a communist state, so it can be assumed that they were unhappy when East Berlin’s people (who were under a communist state) were allowed to leave the communist state to go to West Berlin, who was supported by the U.S.
  • Lech Walesa

    President of Poland. retired politician. Won the nobel peace prize for human rights campaign
    Connection to the Cold War: STarted a Soliditary movement, which supports anti-communism, so Walesa spread the word and moved people to go against communism.

    Connection to the Cold War: One of the main factors of the cold war was the nuclear arms race, so reducing and limiting nuclear weapons could decrease the threats between US and Soviet Union

    Connection to the Cold War: Since the U.S. and the Soviet Union were both in the United Nations yet never agreed, the General Assembly didn’t function properly.
