The Cuban Revolution begins
The Cuban Revolution overthrew the regime of Fulgencio Batista with the 26th of July Movement and established a new Cuban government led by Fidel Castro in the 1950s. The term "Cuban Revolution" is refering to the social revolution after the overthrow of the Batista government and the adoption of Marxist principles by the new Cuban Government. -
Nikita Khrushchev becomes the leader of the Soviet Union
Stalin passed a away in March of 1953 and Khrushchev had positioned himself as a possible successor; 6 months later he became head of the Communist Party and one of the most powerful people in the USSR. Although he pursued a policy of peaceful coexistence with the West, he instigated the Cuban Missile Crisis by placing nuclear weapons 90 miles from Florida. At home, he initiated a process of “de-Stalinization” that made Soviet society less repressive. -
Geneva Conference begins
It took place in Geneva, Switzerland and its purpose was to attempt to find a way to settle issues in the Korean peninsula and discuss the possibility of restoring peace in Indochina. The conference came up with a set of documents known as the Geneva Accords. These agreements temporarily separated Vietnam into two zones, a northern communist zone, and a southern anti-communist zone. -
Warsaw Pact is formed
The Soviet Union and seven of its European allies sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact, which was a mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states. It called on the member states to come to the defense of any member who was attacked by an outside source. -

South Vietnam falls to communism
On April 25, 1975, South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu resigned his power to Vice President Tran Van Huong. This act left the south with basically no leader. With no support from American forces, the south was left almost completely defenseless. On the morning of April 30, northern tanks had crashed though the Presidential Palace gates in Saigon. -

Cuban Missile Crisis
This sparked a major confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The United States founs out that the Soviets had missiles stationed in Cuba, just 90 miles off of the shores of the Unites States. It was a 13-day debate in which the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles if the U.S. promised to not invade Cuba. -

U.S.S. Pueblo captured
In 1968 the U.S.S. Pueblo, a Navy intelligence vessel, was doing a routine surveillance of the North Korean coast when they were engage by North Korean patrol boats. The crew was taken to 2 comounds and were charged with spying within North Korea’s 12-mile territorial limit and imprisoned. On December 23, 1968 the U.S. and North Korea came to an agreement and the crew was released to South Korea where they were sent back to the U.S. -
Apollo 11 lands on the moon
Apollo 11 was the first landing that brought humans to the moon with Neil Armstrong being the first human to ever step foot on the moon. The Apollo 11 mission occurred eight years after President John Kennedy announced a national goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. It would spark a new race for the coutnries of the world to get to space. -
