    Europe founded the European Coal and Steel Community which became the “nucleus” of Europe’s market. The USSR was unincluded.

    1. Greece and Turkey join NATO. They could be very helpful in a time of crisis and can be offered support if they are in a time of crisis. The more people on one team, the better.
    2. The first hydrogen bomb was tested, and was successful. It was much stronger then the atom bomb, which revolutionized warfare once again.

    1. On March 5th, Stalin dies of a stroke. This could be hopeful for everyone considering how cruel he was. A newer, more negotiable leader could possibly help end the tension between the US and Russia.
    2. Khrushchev, Stalin’s successor, rises to power.

    A city by the name of Dien Bien Phu falls to communism in 1954. This is a win for Russia, which did not look good for the anti-communists.

    In 1955,
    On July 18, US president Dwight Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev participate in a 5-day summit, called The Geneva Summit of 1955, with British and French powers (Big Four Powers) in Geneva, Switzerland. Topics like the unification of Germany (political), and economic links (economical) were discussed. This meeting was a step towards easing the Cold War despite no agreements being reached.

    1. America sends its first planes over the Soviet Union to get a sense of the area as for a military strategy. It could be very useful if they were to ever go to war.
    2. The Soviet Union abolishes the Cominform.
    The Cominform was set up to bring together the communist parties of Europe. It implied that all communist parties had to follow the Russians and their form of communism.

    In 1957,
    Eisenhower receives the "Gaither Report" from his scientific committee which strongly recommends the construction of bomb shelters and the building of more missiles. This is important to the Cold War because the reality of bombings from the Soviet Union sets in. The US has to take precautionary measures to protect people by building the shelters, but also to be able to fight back if the Soviet Union launches nuclear bombs. These shelters still stand today, proving how strong they were.

    The second Berlin crisis begins, in which Nikita Khrushchev orders all western forces to leave Berlin within six months. The western half was controlled by the west at the time, but leaving was essentially handing the power over to Khrushchev, which none of the allies were going to do.

    China had controlled Tibet for 9 years, and after an uprising, thousands of Tibetans died. The US joined in condemning China for their actions. Many people were angry with China for their choices.
