America Drops Bomb on Hiroshima
Truman decided to drop the bomb on Japan because he thought that this would be the end to the war. If the bomb was dropped fewer lives would be destroyed than if there was a full out war. Truman Doctrine announced
Truman makes a speech and tries to reach out to Turkey and Germany and ask them to help stop communist efforts in their countries. This doctrine was the official declearation of the Cold War. Berlin Airlift Begins
West Berlin was very vulnerable at this point. West Berlin was unable to support themselves so highway routes were opened. But as Stalin realized these were not helping Soviet needs, he closed the highways. U.S. and U.N. forces fight against North Korea
North Korea decided to attack several points along the 38th parallel. The UN breached the peace due to this attack. Soviets launch first man made satellite
The Soviets put two satelites into orbit which were powered by rockets. This caused fear in the U.S. because the satelites could have put misiles into the satelites. Fidel Castro becomes leader of Cuba and installs communist government
Castro became the new leader of Cuba after he forced the old leader into exile. The United States recognized Castro but removed thier support once Castro began a new reform. Bay of Pigs Invasion
A revolution that brought Fidel Castro to the front lines. Fiedl Castro came to power with many people who were communist and therefore enemies of the U.S. This message rallied the Cuban people. Kennedy tried everything to get rid of Castro, he would have the CIA train Cuban exiles as an invasion force to invade Cuba.

East Germany builds Berlin Wall
East Germnay began building a wall that would block off access to West Germany After this wall was built citizens could not go from East to West, and supplies were cut off. Cuban Missile Crisis
The standoff between the U.S and Cuba lasted for thirteen days. Officals from both the U.S and Cuba eventuarlly agreed that the missiles in Cuba would be removed if the U,S. would not invade Cuba. China Explodes First Atomic Bomb
On this day China joins the limited group of countries that have nuclear capabilities. The United States was n ot all that surprised that China had succeeded. But nevertheless they were concerned. Berlin Wall Comes Down
As the Cold War began to come to an end, the communist leader of East Berlin decided to allow its citizens to cross the boarders. Millions of people from East visited the West once this occured.
