Since there was a blockage in Berlin the United states got an aircraft named Skytrain to deliver well-needed supplies to Berlin by June 25th British, Canadian, French, Australian, New Zealandia, and South African aircraft joined in with supplies for Berlin -

The North was supported by the Soviet Union and China while the South was supported by the U.S. and United Nations. Those people were against each other at the time due to the Cold War and got involved because they did not want the opposing sides' political views to win. -

On that date, the Soviet Union launched the first space satellite into space which disappointed the United States because they wanted to be the ones to accomplish that. That sparked more tension and a desire to make new technology. -

The Cuban Missle Crisis
The Soviet Union promised Cuba to defend them so they had ballistic missiles stationed in Cuba. Those said missiles could reach the United States within a few minutes. On August 29th the United States reported U-2 planes flying over the island and the presence of a launching site was registered. That was a significant enough threat to prepare for a nuclear war. -

On July 16, 1969, the United States launched Apollo 13. It landed on the moon on July 20th and was declared the first time man set foot on the moon. -
Destruction of Berlin Wall
The GDR announced that the citizens were free to cross the borders of the wall. People flocked to the wall and celebrated together drinking beer and hammering away the wall. The reunification of East and West Germany didn't become official until October 3rd, 1990 -
Creation of Warsaw Pact
It´s an alliance made by the Soviet Union and eastern European countries to counter NATO. The original members were the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and the German Democratic Republic.
