The worlds largest international organization. Aims of the org are promoting and facilitating cooperation in internation law, internation security, economic development, social progress, human and civil rights, civil liberties, and politcal freedoms. -
Iron Curtain
It was a phrase to describe parting of Europe because of Soviet job of the Eastern European countries. It presented the idea that capitalism was the correct idea to follow and communism was the "iron curtain" dividing the world into capitalist Western powers. -
Truman Doctrine
It offered support to all countries who declined communism, attempting to contain it, and ultimately end it. Helped fight the spread of communism and it was a response to a crisis. -
The Marshall Plan
A plan made in the US to make atomic bombs. It contained communism. -
European Economic Cooperation
Ran the US-financed Marshall Plan for reconstruction of a continent brought up by war. 34 countries are apart of this. This helped all countries share their feelings on war and other complication happening all over the world. -
Berlin Airlift
An airlift that supplied food and fuel to citizens of west Berlin when the Russians closed off land access to Berlin. The Berlin Airlift showed the Soviet Union the western Allies would not give up on the people of West Berlin and were prepared to do whatever they could to keep their independence. -
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Established by the US and Western Europe after WWII. The countries involved agreed to come to the aid of any member who was attacked. It protected the US. -
Peoples Republic of China
A sovereign state located in East Asia. Worlds most populated country. -
Korean War
Korea became a divided nation. So US and Soviets withdrew their troops from Korea. The US would help south korea so the Soviets supplied North Korea wtih tanks, airplanes, and money to take over the peninsula. -
Khrushchev
He was the leader of the Soviet Russia upon the death of Joseph Stalin. He was apart of the de-Stalinization. He undid some of the damage Stalin caused. He was the guy the US negotiated with about the Cuban Missile Crisis. -
Geneva Accords
The text agreement that formally ended the war between France and Vietnam. It stopped war. -
KGB (Committee for State Security)
The official name of the umbrella organization serving as the SU's premier security agency, secret police, and intelligence agency. -
Warsaw Pact
Military alliance of communist nations in East Europe. They planned on it being a military deterrent to the NATO nations and any plans they might have on attacking the SU or its allies. -
Sputnik
An unmanned Soviet satelite that orbited the earth. It started the Space Race adn was the first time humans successful reached space. -
Berlin Wall is erected
It separated East and West Berlin. It filled the last hole in the Iron Curtain that divided Europe into two blocks. The Wall symbolized the separation of the world in terms of opposing divisions. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
US discovered Soviet stategic nuclear missile bases under construction in Cuba, leading the most dramatic and dangerous crisis of the nuclear age. It had the whole world holding their breathe over the possibility of there being a nuclear war. -
Brezhnev
Leonoid Brezhnev was a leader of the Communist Party in the SU.
He had a doctine named after him.It was policy promoted by him that asserted that the Soviet Union had the right to use military force to maintain the strict rule of the Communist Party in nearby socialist countries. The Brezhnev Doctrine was used to justify the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 after Alexander Dubček introduced political reforms there. -
Tet Offensive
A series of surprise attacks on major cities, towns, and military bases all throughout South Vietnam. It showed American forces in Vietnam that the Viet Cong were a formidable enemy. -
Helsinki Accords
The Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. Designed to reduce tension between the Soviet and Western blocs. Helped East and West Germany unify and raised human rights. -
Iranian hostage crisis
Crisis between Iran and the US. 52 US citizens were held hostage for 444 days. Carter tried everything to get the Iranians to release the American hostages. but he failed. -
Russian Invasion of Afghanistan
Russia invaded in an effort to expand their Asian influence and preserve the communist goverment. It protected their interests in Afghanistan, mainly oil, from Iran and other nations. -
Perestroika and Glasnost
Perestroika was an economic policy designed to bring some open market concepts to the USSR. Glasnost was an attempt to allow more free expression in the media and the arts. -
Chernobyl
Chernobyl was a nuclear power plany in the Soviet Union. A massive failure occured which spread radioactive waste across parts of Europe. It was the worst nuclear power plant disaster, so it gives an idea of how bad things can be fore the environment and local populations. -
Tiananmen Square
This square is located in Beijing, China. It is the site of mass student protests in 1989. The protests led to a massacre. It brought worldwide attention to the atrocities suffered by the citizens of China. -
Berlin Wall is torn down
They tore it down so that Germans could travel freely over the border. It reunited East and West Germany. Symbolized that communist rule was no longer splitting Berlin. -
Gorbachev
He was president of the SU. His ruling led to the downfall of the SU in the early 90's. He helped the termination of communism in Russia and East Europe. Also helped end the cold war. -
End of the USSR
The economy was falling. Socialism and communism failed as well. -
Yeltsin
First Russian president of post-USSR. He defied the August Coup and vowed to turn Russia into a capitalist democracy. That gained him respect from the West. -
Putin
Prime minister and former president of the Russian Federation and a great man. -
Ho Chi Minh
Vietnamese communist revolutionary leader who was prime mi
