Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union during World War II and during the beginning of the Cold War. h/s- He effected what the Soviet Union did during his years as leader. He controlled what the country did through communism. -
First H bomb explosion
The hydrogen bomb was a new bomb, at the time, that was more destructive than what was used in Japan. h/s- The hydrogen bomb caused very intense tensions between USA and the Soviets because they both had the technology. -
iron curtain
This was the imaginary line that divided Europe into two sections. One being controlled by communist Russia and the other by non-communists. h/s- It showed that the continent was divided through governments and this was another problem during the Cold War because the battle fronts were divided by just a border. -
United Nations
The United Nations is the worlds largest organization that helps maintain world wide conflicts. h/s- The United Nations was set up after the failed League of Nations and it helped defend non power house countries from being taken over by communists. -
Ho Chi Minh
Ho Chi Minh was the communist leader of Northern Vietnam. h/s- He was the leader of Northern Vietnam and was a big cause of the Vietnam War. He attacked Southern Vietnam with the help of China to try and expand communism. -
Truman Doctrine
This was a doctrine that stated that the US would support Turkey and Greece financially to stay non-communist. h/s- many people believe that this was the cause of the Cold War. If this wasn't set in place communism could have been spread around the world. -
European Economic Cooperation
This was a co-operation in Europe that was formed to help boost the economey in Europe. Trade was increased during this time. h/s- Helped the European countries get back on track from the expensis frim WWII. -
The Marshall Plan
The US supported countries financially after WWII to try and stop the spread of communism h/s- just raised the tension between the US and the Soviets during the Cold War. It also caused some countries to not go communist because they were aided by the US -
Berlin wall erected
The Berlin wall was a wall that was used to keep East Germany safe. h/s- caused East Germnay to be trapped from the West and caused lots of deaths. This seperated the communists from the West. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift was an airlift between West and East Germany. West Germany sent food suplies to the East. h/s- This airlift helped the poor and needy people of East Germany and saved thousands of lives that were being lost because of very poor living conditions. -
Peoples republic of China
China was a important neighbor of the Soviets that they wanted to be commuinist. h/s- was significant because of its location near Soviet Russia and Japan. China also played abig role in the nearby wars by giving troops to Northern Vietnam. -
NATO
The Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization that is a military alliance between several nations. h/s- NATO was created to for the purpose of western Europe from a communist invasion. Without NATO there could have been more land lost to communism and could have caused the war to be different -
Berlin Wall torn down
The Berlin wall was a wall that sepperated East and West Germany. It was torn down in 1949. h/s- the destruction of the wall caused Germany to reunite and to not be seperated. This helped the West by being able to move into communist controlled lands. It also saved the lifes of the dying people in East Germany. -
Korean War
Was a war between Northern Korea supported by China and South Vietnam supported by the UN. h/s- was another fight between the US and communism just on a different battle field. This was the first armed war between the US and SU and was a show case of each others weapons. -
Nikita Krushchev
He lead Soviet Russia during a small part of the cold war. h/s- as leader of the soviets he tried to spread communism to other parts of the world. He started the Socialism in Africa Doctrine to spread communism to Africa. -
KGB
The KGB was a secret police or set of spies that worked for the Soviets h/s- they helped get rid of non communists so that the Russians could spread communism. They could also be used to put fear into the eyes of Americans beacuse they knew that there were spies in their own country -
Vietnam
Was a country near China. It served as a battle field for the US and SU h/s- was where the Vietnam War took place between China and the UN, it was the first place where there was an armed war between the countries in the cold war. -
Warsaw Pact
A pact between Soviet Russia and near by communist countries to help spread communism. h/s- it was the group that the US was trying to defeat because they wanted to stop communism -
Suez Canal
A canal that runs through Egypt and connects the Red Sea and the Mediterainian Sea. h/s- it was a very important canal that was used for shipping between countries. Some countries like Britain and France faught to try and control it. -
Sputnik
This was the first ever satellite in space, was Soviet. h/s- it caused a lot of scare in the US because the Soviets were in space. -
Cuban missle crisis
This was when Russia sent nuclear missles to Cuba and caused the US to become scared because Cuba is so close h/s- showed the real threeat of a nuclear attack on the US. It showed that the US was not safe being that far away from Russia and China. -
Leonid Brezhnev
Was General Secretary of the communist party in Soviet Russia h/s- during his rule the Soviet Union's global influence increased. He also helped increase the military in the SU. He tried to stop the push of Northern Vietnam and wanted there to be a negotiation. -
tet offensive
Communist Vietnam made its first move on Southern Vietnam. h/s- It started the vietnam war and caused thousands of lives to be murdered. It was a result of the tensions between the communists and US. -
Helsinki Accords
It was the final meeting to try and help stop the tensions between the communists and the West h/s- helped stop the Cold War. This was significant because if the cold war continued it could have caused thousands of more lives to be lost. -
Iranian hostage crisis
for 444 days 52 Americans were held hostage by islamists because they took over the US embassy h/s- it showed that not all Americans were safe and that the SU was a real threat. -
Russian Invasion of Afghanistan
The SU invaded Afghanistan and America gave them billions of dollars to help fight off the communists h/s- it showed how much we didn't want communism to expand and how much we hated the SU. -
Moscow Olympics
The 1980 Summer Olympics were held in Moscow, but it was boycotted by over 60 countries because of the invasion in Afghanastan h/s- was important because it showed that the worl was mad at SU for their invasion of Afghanastan. -
Lech Walesa
This was an anti communist movement in Poland h/s- it showed that AMerica wan't the only country fighting back agains the SU and that communists could be defeated in all types of ways -
Los Angeloes Olympic games
This was the 1984 summer olympic games that were held in LA. h/s- showed that the American economey was still in good shape and that the US could go on without the war -
Perestroika and Glasnost
These were words that representented the Soviet renovation of the communist party h/s- showed that the West caused a change in the communist party and that the war was comming to an end -
Chernobyl
Chernobyl was a nuclear disaster at a power plant in Russia h/s- it destroyed a large area of land in Russia -
Geneva Accords
Conference in Switzerland that helped unify Vietnam. h/s- it was an atempt to unify Vietnam and the meeting included both the US and SU which showed that there was less tension between the two superpowers. -
Tiananmen Square
This was a protest of college students in China. It caused China to take military forces to stop them. h/s- it showed that not everyone in China was on the same page -
Mikhail Gorbachev
He was president of the Soviet Union. h/s- he was the only communist born SU president and it showed that the country had changed so much in the last few decades -
End Of USSR
This was the end of the USSR during the end of the Cold War. h/s- it was an end of the Cold War and gave the West a victory of the cold war -
Boris Yeltsin
Was a Russian president and was the first political leader of Russian Federation. h/s- he was a president -
Putin
The current president of Russia. He was also a Prime minister for 8 years. h/s- he is the current president in Russia
