NATO
The NATO was formed in April 1949 when Belgium, Luxembourg, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, and Iceland signed a treaty with the United States and Canada. A few years later West Germany, Turkey, and Greece joined. All the powers agreed to provide mutual help if anyone was attacked. -
Chinese Communist
In 1949, Chinese Communist took control of the government in China, strengthening U.S. fears about the spread of Communism. The Soviet Union also exploded its first atomic bomb in 1949 (for testing). The Soviet Union and the United States were involved in a growing arms race, were both countries built up their armies and weapons. -
