Grant's Overland Campaign Begins
Ulysses S. Grant became the general in chief of the entire Union army. After this he became what is known as the Overland Campaign. This was multiple battles that turned out both good and bad for the union side, but in the end it turned out to help the Union as they were able to deplete Robert E. Lee's troops. Cold Harbor was one of the final battles of this campaign. -
Old Church/ Matadequin Creek
This is the battle that led up to the battle at Cold Harbor. Both armies had been fighting at this Creek/Church. But during this, Robert E. Lee was more worried about controlling the Old Harbor Crossroads. By time the Union found out about that they ended up forcing the Confederates to retreat by outnumbering them. This would lead up to them in the following days, trying to capture the Cold Harbor Crossroads. -

Battle of Cold Harbor Begins
The Battle of Cold Harbor begins. The generals on each side were Ulysses S. Grant (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederates). This is one of the last battles of Grant's "Overland Campaign". He orders 108,000 troops to go into Cold Harbor and attack the Confederates. Cold Harbor is located about 10 miles from the Confederates capital, Richmond, Virginia. This is a major crossing because it can lead you to the capital and you can major railroads crossing to pick up reinforcements. -
Cold Harbor's biggest fighting
The Union decided to attack the Confederates and it failed miserably. After this, the Confederates attempted to come back at the Union and attempted another attack. This, like the Union attack failed terribly. -
The Last Day of the Battle
After the battle ended, Confederates came up with the victory. The Union lost approximately 13,000 troops and the Confederates only lost about 2,500. This was Robert E. Lee's last victory and it didnt kill the Union. They still survived this battle and went on to win the overally Civil War, -
