When Ned Begay was sent to boarding school when he was six years old. While he was there he and other Navajo children where taught English and where told never to speak Navajo or they would be punished. After boarding school he was accepted into high school where he kept learning and practicing his English and school work.
The boarding school and the high school are located outside of the Navajo reservation in Arizona. Chapters 1-5 -
War Starting For U.S.
Ned Begay is a Navajo who's in high school. He was doing well because he learned so much in elementary. One day in High school he was in his room then this kid named Tommy Nez ran in and said We have been attacked. This was devastating. After The U.S declared war. The military held a meeting in the high school trying to get recruits. He went in and heard what they had to say. He also saw a uniform the he loved. Then he decided to want to join but first he hast to ask permission from is parents. -
Boot Camp/Coding School
Ned Begay joined the Marines March of 1943. In boot camp Ned and other recruits hiked, ran, climbed, and more. It was no problem because Navajos did things much harder at home. It came to swimming and Navajos struggled but learned. Soon after they finished they got shipped out to Camp Elliott and went into a classroom where they learned to become code talkers. My favorite character Ned because he was small but strong. My favorite part was when Ned makes friends with Georgia boy. -
Iwo Jima and Mount Suribachi
In this part of the book Ned is on the Island of Iwo Jima. My favorite character, Ned Begay, and many marines fight the Japanese for Iwo Jima and need to get Mount Suribachi a strategic point. The battle lasts for weeks and the Marines advance up the mountain until they capture the summit. My favorite part is when the flag is raised and a chain of marines relay the message down to Ned. I think the theme of this chapter is enjoy your friends because they can be gone in an instant. -
End of War (The Bomb and Going Home)
In this section it takes place in Japan and also a little city named Okinawa within Japan. My favorite character in this section is Ned. The theme is to know who you are even if others treat you differently. A major event in this part is when the Allies drop bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the war. The soldiers and others in different areas celebrated. Ned heard of the news over radio and shot up danced, and shouted. After the war he headed home excited to see his family. Axis quit 1945. -
after war and video
The Navajo code was kept classified till 1968. Many people knew who they were and they were not celebrated either. The Navajo Code was also used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. https://www.doi.gov/video/national-navajo-code-talkers-day
