Dawes Severalty Act Native Assimilation and Citizenship
The Dawes Act, adopted by Congress in 1887, allowed the President to divide and give land to different Indian tribes. The Act was named for its sponsor, Senator Henry L. Dawes of Massachusetts. The Dawes Act was amended once in 1891 and again in 1906. The objective of the Dawes Act was to stimulate assimilation of Indians into American society. This act had a negative affect on the Natives, they lost about 100 million acres of land. -
Wounded Knee Massacre
The Wounded Knee Massacre happened near Wounded Knee Creek on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. It is known as the event that ended the Indian wars. On December 29, the troops went into the camp to disarm the Lakota. During the process, shots were fired and it broke out into war. By the time it was over, at least 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota Sioux had been killed while 25 troopers died. This was a horrific end to the Indian conflicts.
