  • The First Vacuum Cleaner

    The First Vacuum Cleaner
Scene Description: In 1860 Daniel Hess patented the first version of a vacuum cleaner. It was called a carpet sweeper. It had spinning round brushes that picked up the dirt and a system of bellows that produced suction. APA Citation: Invention. (n.d.). Vacuum Cleaner. • Whirlwind

    Whirlwind
Scene Description: The Whirlwind was the first hand-powered vacuum cleaner. Ives W. McGaffney invented it in Chicago in 1865. This vacuum cleaner did not have a motor, but it had a hand crank that operated a fan that generated suction instead. It was not very heavy, but it was difficult to use because people had to turn the crank while moving it across the floor to use it. APA Citation:Invention. (n.d.). Vacuum Cleaner. • H Cecil Booth's Vacuum Cleaner

After this invention was created, other inventors stared trying to improve it. APA Citation: Invention. (n.d.). Vacuum Cleaner. Retrieved October 8, 2012, from http://vacuumcleaner.umwblogs.org/invention/
  • H. Cecil Booth’s Vacuum Cleaner

    H. Cecil Booth’s Vacuum Cleaner
Scene Description: H. Cecil Booth helped the evolution of the vacuum cleaner very much. He first tried to replicate the opposite effect of a machine that used a blast of air to blow dust away. He understood that he had to find a way to filter the air and trap the dust. He patented his suction cleaner in 1901. It was very large and heavy, so it had to be carried by horses. It was made of an internal combustion engine and did not have any brushes. After this invention was created, other inventors
  • James Murray Spangler’s Vacuum Cleaner

Scene Description: James Murray Spangler was a janitor in Ohio who was allergic to dust. Because he could not afford to leave his job, he decided to make his own vacuum cleaner in 1907. He made a rough design out of a soap box, an electric motor, a broom handle, and a pillow case. After realizing that his invention had sales potential, he decided to sell it to Susan Hoover, the wife of a leather goods manufacturer. Susan Hoover was very impressed with the cleaner, and her husband bought the

  • Vacuum Cleaners Made Now

    Vacuum Cleaners Made Now
Scene Description: When a vacuum cleaner is plugged in and turned on, a motor attached to a fan turns on. While the angled fan blades rotate, the air is pushed forward in the direction of the exhaust port. The air is forced ahead, and the pressure behind the fan drops. This creates suction inside the vacuum cleaner. Friction carries the dirt to the vacuum bag. Many vacuum cleaners have brushes that loosen up the dirt. APA Citation: Invention. (n.d.). • iRobot Roomba Vacuum Cleaning Robot

    iRobot Roomba Vacuum Cleaning Robot
Scene Description: Roomba was introduced in 2002. It allows people to vacuum with less effort because it moves by itself. It has sensors that allow it to prevent itself from falling down stairs and running into something. It has a spinning side brush that cleans along wall edges and counter-rotating brushes that act like a broom and a dustpan. It also has a very powerful vacuum that vigorously pulls dirt and hair off the brushes.
