    Clara and her mother Margaret sing "Statues and Stories" at the top of the show as they first take in the beautiful city of Florence, Italy as tourists.
  • Act One Scene 1, "Statues And Stories"-pg. 10

    As Margaret and Clara are wandering around, Clara's hat falls off, and Fabrizio Naccarelli picks it up for her. It is love at first sight. Margaret sees this and steers Clara away from him.
  • SONG-"The Beauty Is", pg. 17

    Clara and Margaret are on a museum tour. Clara wants to see Fabrizio again, but her mother wants to continue to take the tour. She sings "the Beauty Is" to herself as she takes in what she sees, while daydreaming about her new love interest.

    Clara is surprised by the better-dressed Fabrizio, who presents her with a bouquet of flowers. He brings his father along, Signor Naccarelli, to help persuade Margaret to let Clara and Fabrizio to meet up again.

    Clara uses the instructions that Fabrizio provided for her to find where they were to meet at midnight. She is wandering the streets by herself in a daze, confuses herself and begins to scream.

    Clara sings about how she is lost, which turns into a duet as Margaret finds her lost and confused and sings a lullaby to her to calm her down.

    Fabrizio enters Clara and Margaret's hotel room while Margaret is away to tell Clara how he feels.
  • SONG-"Say It Somehow"-pg. 64

    Clara and Fabrizio sing a duet to tell one another how they feel, which leads to Fabrizio proposing to Clara. They get half undressed before Margaret walks in on them, closing Act One.

    Clara tries to tell Margaret that she is engaged. Margaret tries to dismiss this fact and ignores her.

    Clara is angry at Margaret for not acknowledging that Fabrizio and her were meant to be together. Clara tells Margaret that her father does not love Margaret, causing Margaret to slap Clara.
  • SONG-"The Light In The Piazza" - pg. 72

    Clara sings "The Light In The Piazza" as a solo in response to Margaret slapping her in the face. She is stunned and cannot move.
  • Act Two Scene 5, "The Naccarelli home" - pg. 76

    Clara is preparing to convert to Catholicism in the Naccarellli apartment with the priest and Fabrizio.
  • SONG-"Octet Parts 1&2, Clara's Tirade"

    As Clara and Fabrizio prepare for their matrimony ceremony, France attempts to make her husband Giuseppe jealous, so she kisses Fabrizio, causing Clara to freak out and act like a child. Franca applauds Clara for standing up for who she loves and toasts to her. The entire company sings during this scene.
  • Act Two Scene 6, "Church"-pg. 82

    It is the wedding rehearsal. Clara and Fabrizio rehearse for their wedding. Clara goes to sign the matrimony forms, only for Fabrizio's father to see her childlike handwriting, causing him to call off the wedding and take his family away. Clara sobs and demands to know what is wrong with her.
  • Act Two Scene 10, "The Church" - pg. 100

    Clara sneaks out of her hotel room, ventures around Florence to find the Catholic Church, and Fabrizio there. She tells Fabrizio that he cannot marry her because she knows there is something wrong with her and she doesn't want to cause him any pain. Fabrizio tells her that he loves her and that they are meant to be together through song.
  • Act Two Scene 6, "The Wedding" - pg. 102

    Clara tells her mother that she is scared to leave her, but Margaret assures her that it is the right thing to do, and then Clara gets married to Fabrizio while Margaret closes the show with her song, "Fable."
