The Clinton Liberal Institute in Clinton, New York is founded. It is a school for both men and women, teens to adults in their late twenties. -
First Women's Rights Convention
The first Women's Rights Convention is held in Seneca Falls, New York. They were fighting for equal rights for women. Only two members of the group lived to see the 19th amendment to the Constitution. The 19th amendment allowed women to vote. -
Elizabeth Blackwell Receives Medical Degree
Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman in the United States to receive a medical degree. -

Republican, Abraham Lincoln, is elected president. He believes in equal rights for all people including the African American slaves. The people in the south use many slaves to make a living and are scared that a law will be passed by Lincoln prohibiting slaves. -

When the Civil War started, Clara began doing the humanitarian work that she would be doing for the rest of her life. She nursed and provided supplies for the soldiers in the war. -
International Committee of the Red Cross Founded
The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in Geneva, Switzerland by Henry Dunant and Gustave Moynier. -
The End of the Civil War
The Civil War was ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant at Appomattox Court House. -

Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while watching a play at Ford's Theater. -
Recovering Lost Men After the War
After the war, Clara started to look for and recover lost men so the families of the soldiers could be notified. She was able to recover more than 22,000 soldiers over four years. Out of that 22,000, 13,000 were men that died at Andersonville prison in Georgia. She marked thousands of graves for the men that died. Beginning in 1870 and ending in 1871, Clara nursed civilians in the Franco-Prussian War. -

American Red Cross Begins
Clara began the American Red Cross and became the president of the association. -
Johnstown Flood
The annual flooding of the lake was much more than the citizens of Johnstown expected in 1889. There was 40ft tall wall of debris being carried by the water towards the city. 2,209 people died in the flood. Clara Barton with the American Red Cross built hotels for the people since the houses had been swept away. Around 25,000 people were helped by the American Red Cross after the flood. -
Russian Famine
The Russian famine in 1891 killed about half a million people from 1891 to 1892. -
Does Last Field Work with Red Cross
The Galveston, TX hurricane of 1900 trashed the city. Clara immediatley jumped into action helping the city recover. However, she did so without consulting the new American Red Cross board of directors. Her relief work at Galveston was the last field work she did before she was forced to leave Red Cross. -
Forced to Leave American Red Cross
Clara, at 83, is no longer supported as presient of the American Red Cross by many people. Mabel Thorp Baordman has been trying to take over Clara's position and finally succeeds and becomes the president of the association in 1904. After 22 years of leading American Red Cross, Barton is forced to cut all ties with the organization. -
Death
Clara died in Glen Echo, Maryland.
