  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    On April 12, General P.G.T, commanded the Confederates to open fire at the Union. The Union could not keep up. So the Union surrendered at Fort Sumter and they left. This battle was important because it was the first time any army surrendered.

    Major Gen. Grant lead the Union to Vickburg. The army later surrounded the Confederates. Which then lead the Confederates to surrerend. This battle is important because this was called the most brilliant military war campign.

    Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle bteween the two armies. The Union marched all the way from Washington to Virginia. Then July 21, 1861 the Union attacked the Confederates. This battle was important because it was the first major battle.
  • Battle of Fort Donelson

    Battle of Fort Donelson
    After Fort Henry, Grant and his soldiers went to Fort Donelson. There after failing to get through Grants line, they surrendered. Which was the biggest victory for Grant's career. This battle was important because this is were Grant's name "U.S" came to him.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Marching from Fort Monroe the Union ran into a small army of the Confederates. The Condfederates brought their heavy gunners up front. The Union weakend with having so many people dead but were able to hang in for a few more weeks. This is important because the Union lost a lot of men to death.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    The first battle to be out west. 40,000 Confederate soldiers attacked the Union in the woods. Grant's counteroffensive overpowered the Confederates. This is important because it was one of the bloodiest battle in US History and the Union won even though they had more deaths than the Confederates.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The two armies confronted each other September 16 in Maryland. Then at dawn the Union had a powerful assualt on the Confederates. The Union won this battle on Septemeber 18. This battle is important because when the Union won, President Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamtion later on because of this win.

    Battle of Fredericksburg
    The Union was close to ending the war. But were not ready for Jackson's counterattack. Therefor, the Union fell and the Confederates won. This battle is important after this battle Lincoln had a decision to keep or get rid of Burnside which Lincoln did remove him.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    The Confederates decided to attack the Union while the Union was not expecting it. Stonewall Jackson took 30,000 Confederate soldiers and attacked. The Victory was sweet but also sad as Stonewall Jackson was shot by his own soldier because he thought he was a Yankee. This battle was important because this gave the South hope and was considered the best victory of General Lee.

    The Union came from behind as the Confederates were marching up North. This battle lasted 4 hours. The armies were stubborn and neither of them gave up. This battle was important because this battle neither of the armies were giving up so easy.

    General Lee had his army ready in a small town of Gettysburg. Waiting for the Union to come and when they did they were ready. As the Confederates pushed the Unions back. This battle was important not because of how many people died but because it was a stepping stone for the army.

  • Battle of Chattanooga

    Battle of Chattanooga
    After Grant was in charge of the western Union army, he wanted to take over Chattanooga. On Nov. 3 the Union began their attack. Then Grant and the Union took over Lookout Mountain after 6 hours of battling. This is important because this was deeping the Union army for capturing this.
  • Battle of Petersburg

    Battle of Petersburg
    Marching from Cold Harbor, Meade's army crosses over to Petersburg. The Confederates 5,400 that were on the front lines were pushed back by the Union. The Union was succuesful at Petersburg. This battle was important because it would give an edge to whoever won to win the war.
  • Battle of Atlanta

    Even though the Confederates just suffered a loss, Gen. John Bell wanted the Union out. So on July 21, he commanded the Confederates to march 15 miles to attack the Union. But the attack failed. This battle is important because this gave the edge to the Union army.
  • Appomattox Court House

    The Union cuts off the other soldiers from Lee. Then the Union surrounded the Confederates in the Appomattox Court House. Which then lead the surrender of the Confederates. This is important because the Confederates surrender and gave the Union the victory and the Civil War ended.
